February 22, 1941. Mre We Be Vilson Chairman of Athletic Committee Ottawa University Ottawa, Kanses Dear Professor Wilson: in answer to your very good letter of the 14th instant scnenentne the atti- tude of the Big Six Conference to the A. Ae Ue and Ban Johnson teams with compete with our University squad, I beg to state that we are not permitted to schedule games with any athletic institution except schools giving Baccalaureate degrees with 120 hour requirementse We are not permitted to pley Haskell or any junior col lege or anyone — below our academic ranks Doubtless the Big Six will make a rule similar to the one that the Big Ten has made end permit us to schedule gemes with army and navy athictic teams as was done’ in the last ware As yet the Big Six has not teken this stepe You are exactly right, but while they are not professions, they do not — harmonize with our athletic s Set-Up. ‘Here is our ruling, Professor ¥ilson. When an athlete is in school, he is not permitted to play in any outside competition during his enrollment in the institu- tion even though he is not at thet time pompeting on en sthletic team. May I state it in enother way? Pelph Miller who is now in school is not competing on any of our varsity teams, but if during the year that he is enrolled he would perticipate in any A. Ae Ue or Outside team, he would be berred from further competition at the University. Meny of our schools do not have jurisdiction over their athletes when they are not enrolled in the school. But during the time that they are enrolled they cre permitted to participate on no other team regardless of their athletic participetion in this school. ‘Now regarding summer basebell. If any ethletes desire to play summer base- ball, it is necessary for them to secure permission from our faculty representative. They will stete where they are to pley and thet they are not receiving monetary con- sideration from eny organized baseball essocietion. Of course, they could pley with town teams and with the so-called industrial leagues. These are not frowned upon. This rule provides a way to keep tract of the boys and see that — are not signed up with organized baseball play under an assumed nam@e | -
