WOODY, AGENCY MANAGER ROOM 2136 120 S. LA SALLE STREET CHICAGO, ILLINOIS CHICAGO, ILL., October 1, 1937 Dear Doc, I will appreciate, of course, anything you can do for those kids that I got to go down to the University. From my experience in coaching, if we get two good ones out of the four, that will be a pretty high percentage. Farl Close worked in a bakery last summer and saved enough money to help him get started. His father is a carpenter, consequently, just makes a living. I like this Irishman, and when he was playing here he appeared like a guy that had a lot of buzz. Krichbaum went down to Purdue at the last minute. Now, Doc, if these guys don't make good, I am not the kind of a fellow to say that Phog Allen and Ad Lindsey are a couple of bums. So, if they are worthwhile, anything you can do for them will be appreciated. These fellows are known well enough in Chicago coming from three different sections of the City, to get us most anyone that you might want out of this town. And it is more than likey that from this little nucleus we can make Chicago a fair feeder for the University. I always knew, Doc, that you were a very valuable asset of the University of Kansas, but having worked with you some for the last six or eight months, I have a greater appreciation of your abilities and the contributions you have made to the schoole And if there is a chance for me to put in a good word to that affect, I should appreciate your advising me. Being younger and dumber, I always welcome the opportunity of self improvement, so it really isn't generosity, a it is pure selfishness on my part. aa The boys received your mimeographed copy of the four year Major in Physical Biucation, and both are very well pleased with it. They, incidentally, were terribly impressed by you. I can see how you could become the greatest recruiter in America, even if you make it just a side line on a part time basis. As a salesman, Doc, you are okay. The young man of our domicile doesn't have either a varsity foot- ball or basketball. I expect he would do better with a basketball, he is tall and thin. Anyway, I hope he is intelligent, and it ale ways appeared to me there was more intelligence and skill required in basketball than in football. It was awfully nice to see you. Believe me, it is a real pleasure to do anything I can to help your own good self and the University or of Kansas. Just keep in the background that if you want somebody
