The other day I was at our Lamp Division plant and the people
were talking to me about the desirability of placing some of our newest
lighting equipment, designed for such purposes, in a modern gymnasium,
to be tested under actual conditions. This is not to say that they do
not. already have such installations; there is, for example, one in the
Butler Field House, Butler University, Indianapolis, but I understand
that they have some equipment that is even later and better than that.

Anyhow, I suggested that if it so happened my University was
in the market for new equipment, there could be no better location, be-
cause of your prominence in the field of sports, particularly basketball;
because the University has a fine gymnasium; because it is centrally lo-
cated and host to a great many scholastic and college athletes during
the course of a school year. The Lamp Division people were delighted
with the suggestion and asked that I get in touch with you. I explain-
ed to them, of course, that I had no earthly notion that the University
was in the market for new lighting in the gym and that for all I knew
they had just put it in in recent months, but that I would sound you out.

Our engineers actually believe that this new lighting is con-
ducive to a better brand of indoor sports, because of appreciably better
vision. I imagine that a mtually agreeable arrangement could be made
if you happen to be interested.

I have tried the last couple of winters to nab you in New York,
and take you out to see Sue and the boy, but you are very hard to nab.
How about giving me a ring the next time you are here?

I have your letter of the ninth
relative to C. C. Hardy who is an applicant
for the position of football coach in our
high school. I am glad to know your opinion
of Mr. Hardy because I know that you are ina
position to judge his ability while at the
University and I value your judgement highly.
However, we made a tentative offer to an
applicant last week before your letter came.
I might add that we have forty-seven applications
from which we will make our selection.

I am sending my son, Bob, down to
the University this fall. You will probably see him
as he likes basketball and was very faithful to the
game during his high school course, I don't kmow
that he will make the team but I do hope that he
has enough ability to make the squad as I would
like very much to have him come under your training
if -possible. He is a pretty good boy, even if this
is his father saying it. He was elected to the
national honor society this spring and has served
as advertising manager of the high school paper
during his senior year. He is only six feet tall
and that is rather short as the men on your teams
AVErPALe.

Dear Sir:

I am writing to you to advance the cause of Cleon R. Childs
of Rexford, who has an ambition to go to K.U. He needs 4
job to make the break. In some cases, you may be able to
push something in the way of a good boy who is willing to
work and make sacrifices in order to get an education.

Cleon is a slightly abovive average student, and clean in
morals. He comes from a good family who are not in the
best of financial condition and consequently cannot send
Cleon on thru school. They are not a family to believe
much in education, and if he goes he must go under his own
power. He is 18, six feet in heighth, and weighs about
160 lbs. He played center and forward on our basketball
team the past year, and scored better than 500 points in
regular scheduled games, which I believe is fairly good for
a boy from a small school, especially when we had some
rather tovgh competition. If you followed the smaller
schools any, you will recall that our team went thru the
League, and thru the Colby Regional in Class B, and to the
Class B State Tournament at Salina.

Cleon has made an excellent track man in addition, and took
lower than first in the hurdles but once this spring. He
has played a little football, and should make an end.

Several of the other boys on the squad are going to Washburn
but that is out of the question for Cleon as the tuition is
too high. He has expressed a preference for K.U. over any
other school and probably will not get too interested in

any openeings that might turn up down here at Topeka.

He needs a job for room and board. I think about the limit
of his money from home will be books, clothes and tuition.

Do you think you can do anything for him?
