Dear Phog:

Carney Smith was in to see me this
morning to make application for the position
of football coach in our high school. Being
a member of the board of education for lo these
many years, I realize that many things enter
into the qualifications of a man for a teaching
position. I would therefor like your very candid
opinion of Smith for this position. He seems like
an upstanding and earnest young fellow to me but
I know that you had four years! contact with him when he
was at the university and playing on the football
team. I will, for that reason, value your judgement
very highly.
