Duo i ft ca lah, Mbt — oyu ye FO can 5, a0 Dear Fellow Faculty Members: Doubtless you have noticed, along with the rest of us, the great poverty of play facilities for our children here in the city of Lawrence. With that idea in mind, the Department of Physical Education desires to render service to faculty members — who have children, Our plans are not fully worked out, but our idea is to open the gymnasium on Saturday mornings to the children of faculty members. We plan to use our physical education faculty to teach your youngsters recreative games and play. If you will send to my office the names of your children, ages and sex, our faculty will outline a program for your approval. There will be no charge for any of this service. If we can get sizeable groups, memoders of our women's department will teach the giris, and our staff in the men's department will teach the boys. This, of course, would not include instruction in individual sports, such as boxing, and individual tap dancing, but we had in mind such group activities as swimming, basketball, badminton, deck, tennis, suffleboard, volley ball and tap dancing for the youngsters. In case any parents should desire to accompany their children they will be welcome. The Lawrence public schools close their gymnasia in , the high school and the elementary schools at vacation time, such as Thanksgiving and Christman, We have petitioned the past superintendent of schools and the members of the Board of Education to keep the gymnasia and the playgrounds open so # that Lawrence children may have a safe-and wholesome place to play during vacation time under supervision. ly notion is that. if you parents would reflect this opinion to the members of the Board they would see the great enjoyment that accrues to children during their free time. And too, it would relieve us here in Robinson Gymnasium of having a great number of the school children of Lawrence swarm on us with play paraphernalia. There is an unwritten rule at the University which pronibits others than University students from using the fecilities, The University cannot be expected to take care of the problems of the city of Lawrence in this instance, at least. We shall be very happy to have your early response to our proposed plan so that we may work out a definite schedule, Very sincerely yours, eet te FCA: AH | Diypector. of Physical Education and Recreatio: CHG. Dear Faculty Member: The first recreation class for the children of faculty members was held last Saturday morning in the gymnasiun, and we trust that egch and everyone of them enjoyed the hour of plays Beginning next Saturday the hour for this play will be from 9 to 10 o'clock. Before the children begin participation in the various activities that will comprise the year's program, we request that they have a thorough physical examination by a physician, This examination should include the vital organs and the other usual features of an examination preparatory to participation in vigorous activities. This is a safety measure required of all students participating in physical education activities in the University, and we feel it ad- visable to request the some of these children, Will you kindly have your children bring a signed statcment from the doctor tha t the examination has been completed when they come to slass next Saturday morning? As a hygienic and health measure we are also asking each child to wear a gymnasium sit on Saturday mor ningse Our faculty committee (composed of Miss Byrn, Mr. Raport and Mr. DeGroot) feel that it would be advisable at this timc to limit the age group of the children to 8 to 15 yearse | We will welcomo any suggestions you may wish to offer concerning the program for these children, and assure you of our desire to cooperate wholchcartodly. Dear Dr. Allen: Mrs. Barr and I appreciate very much your proposal to arrange a Saturday play period for faculty children. We have found that living here on the hill, it is especially difficult to keep our children in acitivities on Saturday. We are in a neighborhood almost devoid of children. We have two children: f Marilyn, age 9; Margaret, age 7. my If you are able to arrange a time for children as young as ours, we will certainly have them on hand. P.S. I would like to say what I have thought often: I appreciate what you are doing for the University and the wholesome influence you have on all the people with whom you make contact. I admired your work before we came to Lawrence, but now that we are here, I admire you even moxe personally.
