My dear Dr. Allen:

I ask pardon for the long delay in responding
to your letter of December 14 concerning the continuation of
Mrs. Bauman. I regret exceedingly, as I am sure you do, that
we are obliged to go on with the present arrangement for the
rest of the year. This in spite of the fact that Mrs. Bauman
is far more competent and experienced than anyone else we
could get. However, I am recalling your statement that the

present arrangement is positively not to be extended beyond
this year.
