January 10, 1046 Mr. John S, Cannon | \ §12 Searritt Building Kansas City 6, Missouri . Dear Jacks , I have not been having any too good luck with Biff Jones and I am rather sceptic regarding the Army-Navy football film, Our University students wanted the Army to pick the beauty queen and we asked Biff to get it done with Red Blake arid the football team. It was only a perfunctory thing, if he didn't want the team to do it, he could have appointed a committee quietly and the result would have been the same, We sent him wires and finally he made the excuse that he thought it had been taken care ofe é I would do it for you, Jack, but I am a little loath to try again under the circumstances, See if you can't work another angle — a strong army man in. He is one of the most wonderful young men that I have ever come in contact withe Disappointed is he, of course, when he can not play, but never has he swerved one iota from the intense loyalty that he has for his university and his varsity basketball teame He is a real inspiration to me, iVihgn I talked with him telling him that he is going to graduate &t the end of this semester, and knowing that his trip to Oklahoma City would be pleasurable but not as productive as taking an underclassman who perhaps would get the benefit of the experience of watching the other varsity men, Dean said, “Sure I can understand that." "If you think that is best, it is okay with me." So to you and Irs. Corder, who have developed such a wonderful son, I generously cone gratulate youe It would give me more pleasure than you know to play Dean, but his going out between semesters and our desire to develop for the future causes me to make this situation from one angle, of which I regret very deeply. I had all ready gotten my tickets there from George Edwards, but didn't get down there in time to get - any for November 24. I know that if there are any left you and Mr. Falkenstein will. lasso four for me. I saw him and C.E. McBride just before the Nebraska- Kansas games In spite of the score, it was close, and with a bit of luck Kansas would have wone The price of the tickets may be $2.25 or it may be $2.50 each, but if it be the former, just buy your self some tomato jiuce with the remainder. I'm enclosing a self-addressed, stamped envelope for your reply. Just this one time please extend yourself for me, and I'll appreciate it very much, and not practice the lasiis-faire doctrine againe I saw Sylvester Thomas(Sol) McInen- erney the other day in Omaha(he's our special agent out of Des Moines) and the’ big Celt weighs 215 pounds, which is 18 more than I do. Soth of us could well have served our country during the recent hostilities by letting ourselves be sold for larde I'll bet Sol couldn't jump 14 feet in broad jump now, with all that weight. I am making no predictions on the game. When Purdue beats Ohio State, UCLA b6a%s St. Marys, etc. I give upe I put one dollar on a parlay this week on a ten game guess and hit nine of theme Needless to say, I didn't get any money for that ninety per cent guesse Regards, LC. es ND cue October 26, 1945 Mr. Joe I. In 1955-36 the Eastman Kodak Company of Rochester, New York, filmed a basketball picture of the varsity basketball team here at the University of Kansas. As director of physical education and varsity basketball coach I used Dr, Naismith and showed some of the set-up of the early basketball game with the peach basket nailed to the running track of the gymnasium. The players were dressed in long. white duck trousers and quarter=sleeve shirts. This picture was taken by the Hastman Company for the Teaching Film Division--Visual Instruction. I was fortunate to have been associated with Dr. Naismith from 1902 to 1939 at the time of his death here in Lawrence. If you will write me more fully as to what you desire I may be able to help, you. We do not know whether Dr. Naismith had any pictures of the game as worked out in 1891, or, if he had such pictures, whether they are in the custody of the University of Kansas. But we assume that the University of Kansas is the place to start looking for the picture which we need. Any help you can give us will be appreciated. Re Ve. Coleman RVC sMWM
