Dear Bob; , I have your postcard which was addressed to the Basketball Coach of Kansas State College of Agriculture and Applied Science, Kansas State College, Pitts, Kansas. 2 For your inform.tion, we are at the University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. ‘The Kansas State College of Agriculture is at mattan, Kansas. At Pittsburg, Kensag, they have a Teachers College, as well as Teachers Colleges at Hays and Emporia, Kansas, The University is.a@ group of colleges and we have the volleges of Medicine, Engineering, Journslism, Law, Fine Arte, Pharmacy, and Liberal arts. That is why they callus the University. | Tt is nice of you to write expressing your pleaswre at the uphill fight we made in trying to win the Big Six championship. Iowa State was as hot as the proverbial fire-cracker against us, as they hit 35% of their \ _ shots that night, when their season's average was 24%, However, Coach _ Louis Mense, the Iowa State coach, is one of my old boys, and while Kansas would liked to have won the championship, they were pleased indeed that one of my old players was able to coach the championship team. Coach "Duteh” Lontote of Northwestern University, Coach Adolph Rupp of Kentucky, and Coach "Frosty" Cox of Colorado, are some of my other coaches out in the coaching field. ; ba of - I regret that we do not have a uniform of our basketball team that we could send you. Equipment is so difficult to get that we have had great- trouble in getting enough to equip our boys. We wear woollend and not | rayons. The rayon looks flashy, but to me it has always looked like a bathing suit or equipment for a chorus girl. We wear woollens because they retain the heat of the body better and are better protection of the players, and then I think they are more compatible with an athletic uniform. They are not so flashy but are more substantial. ae Thanking you for your good wishes, and regretting that we cannot comply with your request, I am . : i Very sincerely yours, 3 : Director of Physical Education, POA:AH ; Varsity Basketball Conch, the kar, $, ie F341 aD ne weuld Sure aparcemte Ee We — Ch es ett ter a taal Soe tee | gerry a ri he w, pay ie, Then term, hh | Thank Bob Cowen | le, Meine S05 Maytait! Chambers, M.5., M.D. Ce Hall Director Lawrence, Nensas May 18, 1945 Dear Sirss I am inclosing a statement of the approaching, tuberculosis finding, chest clinic. Will you comply with its suggestion and make an appointment for yourself, your family and your employees? It is especially desired that all food handlers, food processors, and food servers be examined yearly or oftener. We contemplate a special certificate for commer- cial’ firms in which all employees are examined and found negative. Hoping to see you and your people at a clinic, I am, Very truly yours gy 2 oe NK. - ee all Hes Le Chambers, M. De Director Douglas County Health Unit HLC/hm Education, Immunization, Sanitation is Health Conservation Beginning at 1 o'clock on Wednesday, May 25, in the Community Building and lasting till Saturday evening, there will be a chest X-Ray clinic. This will be one in the series of such clinics held and to be held in Douglas County with the idea of detecting cases of tuberculosis sufficiently early to make it possible to do something worth while about them. It is expected that the public schools of Lawrence will be served Wednesday afternoon and evening and Thursday forenoon. There will be occasional short vacant periods during this time when others might be attended without waiting long. It has been found more convenient as well as time saving for everybody to take the people in groups. Please call in, 462, and make an,apnproximately, appointment for your group. Regular operating hours will be 10 to 12, 1 to 5, and 7 to 9. There are separate dressing rooms for men and women. Friendly assistants will be in attendance. We hope to have arrangement for taking bloods for serologic tests. There will be a view-box and continuous clinical explan- atory lecture. We are fortunate in getting X-Ray film for this clinic. The war needs have made it impossible for many people to get X-Rays as they desire them. H. Le Chambers, M,. D., Director Douglas County Health Unit Lawrence, Kansas May 21, 1945. ALLEN DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL EDUCABION UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS LAWRENCE, KANSAS DEAR DOCTOR ALLEN: YOU PROBABLY DON'T REMEMBER ME AT ALL. I WAS ONE OF YOUR FRESHMAN BASKETBALL PLAYERS IN 1932, AND WORKED ON THE STADIUM CREW. BIG BILL JOHNSON FROM OKLAHOMA WAS AT THAT TIME, YOUR ist STRING CENTER, AND MY IDOL SO TO SPEAK, WHEN I WAS IN SCHOOL IN 1932, I WASN'T QUITE OLD ENOUGH TO BE EMOTIONALLY STABLE, AND I FAILED IN MY CLASSES THE SECOND SEMESTER, THE SPRING OF '33. HOWEVER, I LEARNED A GREAT DEAL ABOUT BASKETBALL FROM BILL JOHNSON AND FROSTY COX. THE FOLLOWING WINTER, I SPENT MOST OF MY TIME ACTING AS A HALF QUALIFIED ASSISTANT COACH TO MONK EDWARBS WHO WAS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR AT CONCORDIA HIGH SCHOOL, MY HOME TOWN. DURING ALL THE INTERVENING YEARS, I HAVE FOLLOWED BASKETBALL CLOSELY AND STILL FIRMLY BELIEVE IT IS THE FINEST SPORT IN AMERICA FOR DEVELOPING YOUNG BODIES AND AN INSTINCTIVE SENSE AND APPRECIATION FOR TEAM PLAY. I HAVE ALSO THOUGHT OF PASSING AS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS IN THE GAME. WITHOUT ACCURATE PASSING, ANY TEAM PLAYS UNDER A SERIOUS HANDICAP. CONVERSELY, WITH ITS HELP, ANY TEAM HAS A DECIDED ADVANTAGE, FOR THEY ARE ENABLED TO MOVE THE BALL © SAFELY, AND AT WILL, TO A GOOD SCORING POSITION, AND AT THE SAME TIME CONSERVE VALUABLE ENERGY THAT WOULD BE SPENT DRIBBLING AND RUNNING AROUND. I HAVE BEEN OVERSEAS ALMOST A YEAR NOW, AND THE OTHER DAY, IT OCCURED TO ME THAT IT WOULD BE OF SUBSTANTIAL HELP TO A COACH TO HAVE A "PRACTICE PASSING BOARD" WHICH PLAYERS COULD USE IN THEIR SPARE TIME OR WHEN THEY WERE NOT ENGAGED IN TEAM PRACTICE. THE ENCLOSED SKETCH GIVES THE BASIC ELEMENTS OF SUCH A BOARD. THE MOVABLE DISCS IN THE CENTER OF EACH TARGET WOULD BE CONNECTED BY MEPAL LEVERS TO A BELL, WHEN THE TARGETS WERE HIT SQUARELY BY A BASKETBALL, THE BELL WOULD SIGNAL A STRIKE, OR, A REWARD FOR ACCURACY. PROBABLY THE TARGETS SHOULD BE ABOUT THE SIZE OF A BASKETBALL. THE CENTBR DISCS SHOULD BE SMALLER, MAYBE FOUR OR FIVE INCHES IN DIAMETER AND CONTRASTING IN COLOR. OUR ARMY HAS FOUND THAT WHEN A MAN AIMS AT THE BLACK BULLS-EYE ON THE TARGET RANGE RATHER THAN AIMING AT THE WHOLE TARGET, HIS - MARKSMANSHIP INCREASES AMAZINGLY. I AM ENCLOSING THE SKETCH AND ALSO, MAILING A COPY OF IT AND THIS LETTER TO MONK EDWARDS IN WICHITA. BOTH OF YOU HAVE MY FULL SANCTION TO USE IT AS YOU SEE FIT, PERHAPS THE WASTE BASKET. HOWEVER, I AM INTERESTED IN KNOWING IF THERE HAS EVER BEEN ANY SIMILAR DEVICE USED BY SOME COACH SOMEWHERE IN THE STATES. IF SO, I'D LIKE TO KNOW THE RESULTS. IF NOT, YOUR OPINION AS TO ITS VALUE WOULD BE APPRECIATED. SINCERELY, GO Carhnig ¥ te = _—-_ w= 4 ; llayers Iilestzg /oaat te ae Ow & pe center —<_. oe «st nf om. eg ?
