EVENING AND SUNDAY .- TELEPHONE 326 W. MADISON ST. CHICAGO 6, ILL. : August 9 ; 1944, ANDOVER 1234 Mr. Forrest C. Alien Director of Physical Education The University of Kansas lawnence, Kansas. Dear Mr. Allen: The fifth annual College All-Star Basketball Game will be held at the Chicago Stadium on Friday, December 1, 1944. Fort Wayne, Indiana, win- ners of the world's championship tournament held at Chicago last March, will be the opposition of the All-Star selections; and indications are that the usual record interest and attendance will be maintained. As you will no doubt recall, you and the other members of the All- America Basketball Board who have nominated and elected the All-Stars each year, have done your job so well that the All-Stars have in the past four seasons defeated the world’s champions. This year your task is again difficult, and we shall re-employ the meth- od which was used with such marked success last seasone You will be per- mitted to select not only last year's college graduates, but any man © currently attending school who deserves selection as an All-Star, except that any player who appeared in any of the previous four All-Star games will not be eligible for selection again. The fact that practically all of the basketball players deserving of consideration are either in the armed forces or are taking special courses at college makes this method the most expedient. We are going to find it necessary to make a direct approach to the player immediately after selection in an effort to secure necessary furlough or leave. Hence, this original letter will be your only vote on the select- ionse We are enclosing herewith a list of players who have thus far received ‘nomination and will ask you to kindly check off fifteen of those whom you would care to select. We suggest that you number them one to fifteen in the order of your preferencee Feel free, please, to add any names to this list who have not already been nominated; and when adding names, Please advise, if possible, school and where said player may be reached. I know this is going to take a few moments of your time, but feel certain that we may count upon you for the same interest and coopwration that you have shown in the past. Sincerely, ee Luh eon HARRY WILSON, Director College All-Star Basketball Game — Room 510, 326 W. Madison St., Chicago, 6. haw/fml IRS SS CANDIDATES FOR THE 1944 COLLEGE ALL-STAR_ BASKETBALL SQUAD. Dr. Alfred Wy Nelson, Chairnen, Faculty Athletic Committee, University of Denver, Denver, Colorado. Dear Dr. Nelson: I have known Mr. Cliff Rock when he was an outstanding ath- lete at the College of Emporia. He coached with splendid success in the high schools of the state and last year, in addition to his physical education work at Kansas State, he coached their var- sity hanhernss team. z viet @ public statement after the close of the season that in my opinion Cliff Rock had done more with his basketball talent, proportionately speaking, than any basketball coach who has been at Kansas State during my stay at the University during the past 25 years. lie is a clean, Siees apirites young man. He is enthusiastic, and by the power of his personality he stimulates his men to greater endeavor. I do not know much conmerning his ability so far as coach- ing football is concerned, but I would say that he is a splendid - basketball coach. Neither do I kmow anything about his track and baseball. Cliff Rock has established a fine caenere and it is my | spinion that he would cooperate most wonderfully with the athletic staff, the faculty and the administrative officers. His habits, attitudes, personal appearance are of the very best. I am sure that ‘there could be nothing but: the best impressions made on the commmity outside the institution by his actions. I am very fond of this young man and think that he will make some school a splendid coach. Very sincerely yours, “Director of Physical Education, Varsity Basketball Coach. / UONTIVWERSITY OF DENVER (COLORADO SEMINARY ) DENVER, COLORADO July 18, 1944 Dre feoGes Allen University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen: The University of Denver is exploring possible candidates for the head coaching position for the academic year of 1944-45. Mr. Cliff Rock is among those whom we are considering as a possibility for this assignment. I would be grateful if you will give me your frank opinion concerning Mr. Rock in regard to the following points: le His probable ability to assume the head coaching responsibility in football and basketball, with the possibility of track and baseball, from the point of view of qualities of leadership and ability to inspire young men to work effectively together. General knowledge and skill in relation to the coaching profession. Ability to cooperate with other members of the athletic staff, the faculty, and the administrative officers. Personal qualities, such as habits, attitudes, personal appearance, and impressions made on the community outside of the institution.
