My work here is nic pleasant. We have a lerge group of instructors here sand they are a grand gang to be working with. These fellows are from all over the country and no two of them are from the same college. The Director of Physical Training tried to get a representative group here. All of our classes are held out doors which is one advantage of this climate. Calisthenics get more attention than any other type of activity.1t is more important thet the cadets get a thorough workout than that theflearn eny special skills.I notice thet Goal Hi.geems to be one of the popular activities with the cadets. Of the fellows 1 had last year,Hodges was the best Softball man,Bill Arnold was the best at Tumbling and Apparatus, endRay Niblo was good at most activities. These fellows are good leaders and are well liked by the rest of the Physical Education majors. Slst Place ~ a 8: bs : Oklahoma Dear Mrs. Calder, I am very happy to have your kind letter of the 14th instant. Mrs. Allen and I were talking about Mariam this morning. Mrs. Allen asked that she be permitted to contact Mariam with a _wiew to making her feel more st home here in lewrence. She is in Kansas City today, but when she returns I em expecting to heave a talk with her and we will sce if we can not ease some- way the disappointment of her first fow weeks. : Dale 8 Frankly, I think fraternities and sororities are badly overdone in this school as well as in others in this vacinity. However, youth does not have the philosophy required to combat this situation at times, so wetve got to go along with them until better days. I more than appreciate your concern and feeling for your daughter, because our last two of six are attending the University of Pennsylvania and we have none of our children at home . You can realize how Mrs. Allen worries at all times regarding their happiness. og ‘Our son, Robert, graduated from the University last year and is now a student at the medical school of the University of Pennsyl- vania. Eleanor, our youngest daughter, who was 20 yesterday, was unhappy going to school here at home so she enrolled along with Rob at Pennsylvania. She's enjoying it very much and since she's a junior I believe she will enjoy her two years back east. ‘I. think it's a good thing for the youngsters to get away from home and to view the domicile at a distance rather than from close-up. I assure you that it will be a pleasure for Mrs. Allen and me to know you and Mr. Calder. I trust that when you come to Lawrence you will give us a ring and stop by and say “hello”. Dear Mr. Calder, Your very good letter of Oct. 11 has been received and I assure you I will be happy indeed to make Mariam's life as pleasant as possible here at the University of Kansase I am sorry that fraternity and sorority life here is much exaggerated beyond its normal worth. It's too bad that the younger people view this over-emphasis with se much concern. It makes for a lot of suffering that should not exist, but I feel that every good thing has some attendant evils. Assuring you of our cooperation in emphasizing the durable things in Meriam's life I am : Sincerely yours, Director of Physical Education and Recreation FCA/pg Varsity Basketball Coach October 15, 1941 Mr. Lee Calhoun 900 Fidelity Building Kansas City, Mo. — . Thank you for your good letter of October 13. It was very nice of vm te pass on my letter to Parke Carroll. I'm to speak to-night at the William J. Bland Post at the University Club at 7 pem. along with Clyde MoBride and Parke Carroll. I'll be gled to take an opportunity to say a word to Parke if it so presents itself. I enjoyed the wonderful description that you gave of Doctor Nigro and some of the Notre Dame fellows. It was graphic. Regarding Milton, I've given him Roy's address and Iprefer that he write rather than that I do it. While I'd be glad to communicate with Roy as I have alweys been fond of him, I prefer to place the responsibility onto Milton, because I find that parents too often do too much for their children's benefit causing the children to expect the parent to paddle the canoe too far up the stream. I will follow this letter up with Milton and see that he writes Roy. Thank you so much for your good letter , and I want you to imow that any time you come to Lawrence it will be my turh to buy buttermilk and soup. I enjoyed my visit with you Aumanaely- With all good wishes I eam Sincerely, , Director of Physical Rindation and Recreation FCA/pg Varsity Basketball Coach October 13, 1941. 900 Fidelity Bldg., Kansas City, Moe Dr. F. C. Allen, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansase Dear Doc3:— The article that I had read was in Parke Carroll's paper, so I called him this morning and met him at the Quare terback Club luncheon. I gave him the copy of your reply to Brownie, and he said he'd give it his immediate attention. I ‘told Parke that he should give your letter the same amount of notice that he gave Brownie's, and he promised to do so, and send me back the cojpy you sent. At the luncheon I saw Quigley, Henry, and several more of the old-timers. At the Notre Dame table I saw several guys who looked like they mould have been up before Judges Reeves and Otis on charges of hop peddling or vote stealing. I did not see the omipresent Dominic Nigro, who usually modestly shows himself from a point of vantage or gets someone else to page him. I guess he was delayed at his office, due to giving a narcotics prescription. | | In his speech today Gwin Henry said that the score cards listed Vike Francis. as weiging 186, whereas he actually weighed over 200. I recall that Christman was listed at 190, but actually was over 200. That's another racketeering system. that pervades college football. What the coaches “ by this is beyond me, but they all do it. I noticed that Bible was now paying dividends on his large salary at Texas. Dawson had some unforseen thing to happenito his Green Wave, or maybe 1% was only some superior coaching by Jess Nesley of Rice. I was glad that Stanford lost and should like to see Fordham and Notre Dame also meet some team better equipped to play them. I should say that the other team that played those last two should be allowed to carry black-jacks to offset the stilletos that their native in-= tuition causes them to carry. The Mussolini boys always think nothing of kicking a mm when he is down, and other such harmless diversions. Have you written to Roy about Mit? If not, his address is Tower Petroleum Building, F.B.I. office, Dallas, Texas. Sincerely yours, ee GU October 18, 1941 Sports Editor Kansas City Journal oo — .
