‘October 14, 1941 Mrs. William Calder 2105 BE. Slst Place ~ a 8: bs : Oklahoma Dear Mrs. Calder, I am very happy to have your kind letter of the 14th instant. Mrs. Allen and I were talking about Mariam this morning. Mrs. Allen asked that she be permitted to contact Mariam with a _wiew to making her feel more st home here in lewrence. She is in Kansas City today, but when she returns I em expecting to heave a talk with her and we will sce if we can not ease some- way the disappointment of her first fow weeks. : Dale 8 Frankly, I think fraternities and sororities are badly overdone in this school as well as in others in this vacinity. However, youth does not have the philosophy required to combat this situation at times, so wetve got to go along with them until better days. I more than appreciate your concern and feeling for your daughter, because our last two of six are attending the University of Pennsylvania and we have none of our children at home . You can realize how Mrs. Allen worries at all times regarding their happiness. og ‘Our son, Robert, graduated from the University last year and is now a student at the medical school of the University of Pennsyl- vania. Eleanor, our youngest daughter, who was 20 yesterday, was unhappy going to school here at home so she enrolled along with Rob at Pennsylvania. She's enjoying it very much and since she's a junior I believe she will enjoy her two years back east. ‘I. think it's a good thing for the youngsters to get away from home and to view the domicile at a distance rather than from close-up. I assure you that it will be a pleasure for Mrs. Allen and me to know you and Mr. Calder. I trust that when you come to Lawrence you will give us a ring and stop by and say “hello”.
