M. CHESTNUT, PRINCIPAL ““Home of the Trojans” September 26, 1940 Dr. F. C. Allen, Lawrence, Kansas. Dear friend, "Phog"., Enclosed is a check for mileage to Beloit last Friday. I'm sorry that I have delayed so long in sending it to you. I was very happy to have you here for the opening of the new stadium field. I was so busy and had so many things on my mind that I was unable to enjoy myself em anyone else. After hearing the comments of several I believe our dedication ceremonies wnat have been pleasing to almost all people. The WPA man spoke at consid-— erable length, but that organization had spent a lot of money on the project(and we might want some more!) The hoisting of the flag with the spot-lights playing upon it seemed to have had the desired effect. We would liked to have won the game. Coach Murry and the boys have been hard at work and hope to do differently with Minneapolis. Dean Lawson will bétwith us Thursday evening and Friday morning. Again, I want to thank you for coming to Beloit. Sincerely yours, September 12, 1940 Mre Ee Me Chestnut, Principal Beloit High School Beloit, Kansas ; My dear “ERarly"s I have your favor of August $0 and you can count on my being present the night of September 20 for the Salim-Beloit football game, which will be the first game played in your new stadiume I will be glad te serve as umpire in your game. As @ suggestion for working out the dedication cerenony during the half intermission, would it be possible to have the field lighting arranged so that you could shut off all the lights, save one, and use that as a spotlight te throw on the flag as it is . raised on the flagpole? Of course, you would have to set a flag- pole out in the football stadium and then at the half the lichts would be snapped out and the oe play the Star Spangled Banner as the flag is raised by the American Legion, or your Boy Scout Organization or the ReOelelCs aa It is thinkable that you could have your boys’ and girls' physical education classes march on the field and stand at attention while the flag is being raised to the accompaniment of the Star : Spangled Banner. Your boys* and girls® glee clubs and the audience could sing God Bless America et some part of the ceremony, and then the short dedication ceremony might follow which could begin with a short invocation followed by whatever celebrities and celubrities you care to us@e I will mke a short talk over the loud speaker whieh I will endeavor to make very appropriate for the cecasions _ This speech would touch such thinge as building the boy physically, emotionally and spiritally strong, touching on statenents such as "The Battle of Waterloo was Won on the Cricket Fields of Eden", the words which are cut in stone above the gymnasium at the UsS. Military Acadeny at West Point by Major Koehler, “Upon the Pield of Free Strife are Sown the Seeds that on Other Fields in Other Days are Borne the Fruits of Vietorye" Well, you can get the general idea, and of course, - we will congratulate the School Board and the citizens who have been far looking enough to have this type of structure. Dane hee: You write in and tell me about how long I should speakg I thought about ten minutes. With this idea you can perhaps draft & program and write me so that I will lmow just about where I some in and leave off. I assure you I will do my very best to impress the people that they have done a good jobe With all good wishes, I am, Sincerely yours, ‘Director of Physical Fducation and Reereation Varsity Basketball Coach FOAslg BELOIT HIGH SCHOOL ~-- BELOIT, KANSAS E. Dear friend Forrest: Thanks a lot for your letter of July 25. It's fine to hear from you. Do you have in mind four or five outstanding basketball players who would be interested in coming into the Navy? We will have a Station team this winter, and it must be one of the best in the country, so I am depending on you and a few of my other good friends in getting the team personnel together. College graduates are preferred as the men will have other duties beside basketball to perform. Good boys with these qualifications will make up our Athletic Staff. The Commandant is inviting National Athletic Individuals to the Wednesday Weekly Reviews as his guest. Since Kansas is in this Naval District, and practically all Kansas men enlisting in the Navy pass through this Station, I know he would be glad to send you an invitation. This would give you an opportunity to come to Chicago and visit your relatives, and we could discuss a lot of important problems. Let me know if you can accept an invitation from the Admiral to attend one of the Reviews in August, and I will see that it is sent along to you. With kindest personal regards, I remain ag August 1, 1941. Ure E, Me Chestnut, Principal, Beloit High Sehool, Beloit, Kansese Dear Early: It wes a pleasure to see you and Lorraine. Lorraine had not been too interested in going to college(for several reasons ) but yesterday's trip mate him really interested. It is getting me around to what I've meant to do for several weeks; that is, tell you how much I have enjoyed the stir that your interview kicked up. Leydents latest move is just another evidence in support of your contention. The family was greatly interested in the article in Colliers. After our fine time together here, this story seemed to concern part of our family. So many times since you were here I've wished that we might have a bit of time together to talk over a great deal that we have in common. 4 college commuting distance from such a colleges I'd be glad for you to pass it on to me. I am very happy working for my Alma Mater, but many times I wish that my youngsters might have an opportunity to live at home and avail them- selves of professional training in fields other than teaching since some of their interests lie in other fields. I might even consider public relations work with a business concern near a University if the concern were an old, reliable outfit. However, I prefer to stay close to teaching.
