REFER TO NO. U. S. NAVAL TRAINING STATION GREAT LAKES, ILLINOIS July 28, 1941 Dr. Forrest C. Allen, Director of Physical Education, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. Dear friend Forrest: Thanks a lot for your letter of July 25. It's fine to hear from you. Do you have in mind four or five outstanding basketball players who would be interested in coming into the Navy? We will have a Station team this winter, and it must be one of the best in the country, so I am depending on you and a few of my other good friends in getting the team personnel together. College graduates are preferred as the men will have other duties beside basketball to perform. Good boys with these qualifications will make up our Athletic Staff. The Commandant is inviting National Athletic Individuals to the Wednesday Weekly Reviews as his guest. Since Kansas is in this Naval District, and practically all Kansas men enlisting in the Navy pass through this Station, I know he would be glad to send you an invitation. This would give you an opportunity to come to Chicago and visit your relatives, and we could discuss a lot of important problems. Let me know if you can accept an invitation from the Admiral to attend one of the Reviews in August, and I will see that it is sent along to you. With kindest personal regards, I remain
