MISSOURI HEALTH AND RECREATIONAL SERVICE March 3, 1941 Dr. Forrest C. Allen Basketball Coach University of Kansas Iawrence, Kansas My dear "Phog"s Congratulations on your game Saturday night at Lin- coln. It must have been a thriller. We enjoyed the Mo.- KU game the other night and without question the better a team won. We were agreed that we have seen better Kansas Se teams but that is as it should be. Your son, Bobby, was the = Se standout in both defensive and offensive play. I Know it makes you feel proud to have a son that can doth interpret and execute your coaching. I have four sons and out of that number I may get one athlete. I hope so at least. I read with interest, a few weeks ago, your suggestion — that the number of players in a basketball game be increased I am in happy accord with you on this, even without enlargi the court. Since but one-half of the court is used now exc . for the ten second period, why not increase the number of players to, say eight, no more than five(5) of whom can be in any one-half of court but have the privilege of interchange. Hockey rules might be invoked so that in case of fouls where free throws are allowed, remove the fouling player from the - - game for a period. If a foul involved but one shot, remove player for one minute. If it were a two shot foul, remove _ him for two minutes. This would unquestionably slow the game. down and be less exacting on players. : d —-——s«sYs«sthink with you that a game as popular as basketball - should be played with a larger number--the Arkansas UJ. coach - opinion not withstanding. We made a special trip to see Bob Fluker after returning from Lawrence, at which time he put in his application and he very quickly was notified that it had been accepted. Living at the Co-Op Club will be a great financial assis- tance to him and his parents. He has filed applicationsfor employment at the Student Enployment Office and with the NYA. I fear that his application for NYA assistance would most likely be rejected, for it might seem that he would not need the help as much as some others. The facts of the case are that he will need to work some. If there is any way that you might be able to help him or recommend him in securing employment it will be appreciated. His golf has been pretty good this summer as he has been able to tie the course record on two occasions, and he had rounds of 31 with par score being 36. You might well know that was too hot for the old man. The baseball season is drawing to a close and it will not be long until pig skins will be the order of the day to be followed shortly afterwards by rebounding basketballs. That means a lot of work for you. We start enrolling tomerrow morning. I hope you have another pleasant and profitable year at Kansas University. Sincerely yours, ES healing Mr. BE. M. If and when the emergency is over we will be happy to use you if we are given enough time to make our budgetary allowance. Of course, it might be altogether possible that we would be committed to certain other scholarships thet might keep us from fulfilling our desire to’ go along with you, but I am hoping that we will have information in advance of the time so that we can take you on when it is your desire to re- turn. Doubtless with the salary that you will get you can lay aside a small nest-egg that will help you to contime your education so that you will mot have to keep your nose to the grindstone. I graduated in 1932 with a degree of Bachelor of Seience in Hlectrical Ingineering. New employment for engineers seemed impossible because of the depression and I found it best to stay with my job as an electrician for the goa terelty In 1936, I was promoted to Chief Flectrician at $150.00 per month. My duties and experience as Electrical Engineer for the Maintenance Department of the University of Kansas are essentially of two classes: First, designing, estimating costs, preparing specifications for material to be purchased and install- ations to be made, inspecting of material and work, and conducting tests such as illumination surveys, strength tests of materials, and efficiency tests of electric refrigerators: Second, super- vising the installing and maintaining of underground cables, elec- tric wiring, machinery, and cQuipment which have to do with the underground electric power transmission, distribution systems in buildings for power, lighting, and laboratory purposes, illumination, intereommunication, sound, air conditioning, refrigeration, ven- tilation, and laboratory equipment. | If Mr. Schaeffer is able to arrange an interview for me I shall be glad to go to Wichita or Seattke or both. I will be on vacation until September lst, and a little trip to Seattle wouldn't be bad at all. I will be going through Wichita wi thee the ext week as I plan to visit relatives in Oklahoma, -I certainly appreciate your writing to Mr. Schaeffer about me, and I hope he will be able to see me and make me an offer, Very truly yours, @ugust 14, 1941.
