THE DONIVERSITY OF PITTSEURGH PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA STUDENT HEALTH SERVICE f : | OFFICES IN THE FALE CLINIC | October 30, 1937 Dr. Forrest C. Allen University of Kansas | Lawrence, Kansas. Dear Dr. Allen: Does the new seamless Basket Ball, cause | your boys, on hard forty feet passes, to throw "floaters", "sinkers", "drops", "curves", "twisters"? These are the terms applied to the tricks done by passing the ball hard. Last year when the ball was used in the presence of the salesman, the players discarded the ball, somewhat to our embarassment. At the coaches meeting claims were made that the ball had been perfected. Perhaps our "new" seamless ball was taken from the "old" vintage. If this latter is correct it still promotes suspicion. On the basis of our actual experiments with the ball we can have no confidence in it. We would like to know the actual facts, with no Sales talk. Cordially, (elon H. C. Carlson, M.D. December 10, 1957 Mire Parke Carroll, ' Sports Editor, Kansas City Journal Post, EZansas City, Missourie f Dear Parkes Thank you so much for your nice letter regarding my book, "Better Basketball". It is nice of you to say the things that you dos , However, when you mention the team as another wimner, I am very pessimistic. We will beat the smaller colleges and a few of the Big Six, but Webraska bas a field house full of seniors and they are all good. They were good enough to split with us last year, and they have four of their five back, and we have one of our five. And the incomparable Parsons is equal to our matchless Pralle. There is still a premium on experience and championship participation. : Nebraska and Missouri look like the boys <- thet will cause lots of trouble with Iow State, Oklehoma, Kansas State and Kensas scrambling for what is left. Allen Athletic Department University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Doc? I meant to acknowledge your clipping on the uniforms sev- everal days ago but the Christmas rush of business is getting head over heels. Ii did appreciate the kind words about the uniforms and I have heard from other sources as well that the boys look mighty nice. from the box scores it looks as though they are looking nice in action as well as uniforms and I know that you are going to be right in the thick of it again this year. Just to pass on a word that I just heard. George Ramsey, the Coach at Clinton High School, was in a few days ago and happened to mention a boy named Hamlin of Windsor High School, Windsor, Missouri. He said he is the best boy he has seen in years. He is big and from all reports does a lot of scoring. I just mention this because I imagine you like to hear about promising boys. Incidentally, he's a senior. I haven't seen him personally. I have an idea for you for a between halves performance that I feel would be of great interest. It would be a table tennis exhibition between two top flite players. Most. people do not realize how scientific the game has become and how in- teresting it can be for the spectators. I am sure I could do all the arranging. if you are interested. All the luck in the world to you and the boys and I hope the suits prove good luck charms. I know you don't have any stronger supporter than I. § tho %. Yours very truly, \ COEN'S ATHLETIC & SPORTING GOODS 6O. DISTRIBUTORS FOR A. G. Mre Me Fe Coon, Jie, Coen Athictic Goods Cos, 925 Valnut Steg Kansas City, Moe Dear Juniors i appreciate your fine letter of the 22nd instante i certainly concur in your thought that it would be better perhaps to concentrate the attention of the spectators on something im the nature of a denonstration of the so~called finer points of the game, We can arrange the microphone on the floor and ict 41 Burgess do his stuf? and lave you and Hel demone strate. That would be swell, Now here is the only rub, After the first geme we have a game betwoen the ever-victorious outfit against the freshman all-star team, e have a double header, and between the two games we have only 15 minutes. So why would it not bee good idea to demonstrate your trick shots, and then after one of our other Big Six games, which start at 7:50 and finish before 9 o'clock, have you four fellows put on a real match, I Imow everye body would stey to see such & metoh. ’ But I am especially amcious to have you and Hal for the between-halves of the OldahomeKansas game. This will Open up our conference season and having two outstanding temis paayers not only of the United States but of the blobe, and I say that without blushing, et Week es ee ee oe ee Six here at home with a bange if you and Hel went to warm up before the match we could set a temnis net here in Robinson Gymmasium so that you ond he omiid Leber up your shots here and then hevw Chis otter action there on the floors. That do you think of that? This is either for your trick shots or for anything you want. I don"t like to ride a good horse to death, but shots which you end Hal demonstrate, then for one of the other games the very near future to have a real match after our game. This , I appreciate, Junior, your cooperation. If at any time you and Hal want to drive dow before the 7th, say — Sunday, January 2, I will arrange for the auditorium court in the enough to play on and get practice. I am writing you another letter regarding the table temis. Thank you so much for the suggestions With all good wishes for the holiday season, I am Sincerely yours, PCAs ATT MMrector of Physical Bducatione G. E. COEN W. F. COEN, JR. : Coen’s ATHLETIC & SPORTING GOODS CO. NINE TWENTY-FIVE WALNUT STREET - - KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI WHOLESALE & RETAIL : : December 22, 1937 Dr. Forrest C. Allen Director of Physical Education University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Doc: I have your letter in regard to the tennis exhibition and have just phoned Hal Surface. It seems that Hal has not played for a month or so and feels that he could hardly do his public justice without some practice. Of course I haven't played in five or six months but then my public has gone the way of all flesh and I am not so particular. However he is very willing to come down and you can count on us for some sort of performance on the night of the 7th. Frankly by the time you set up the court and get us started to play we would be no more than warmed up and ready to hit the ball a few times before you and the boys would be ready to do battle again on the basket ball court. I wonder if it would not concentrate the attention of the spectators more and be more in- teresting if we worked out something in the nature of a demon- stration on some of the so called finer points of the game. for instance I could imagine Al Burgess, the local professional, with a microphone on the floor talking and pointing out difierent shots which Hal and I could demonstrate. Then perhaps after the game we might have a tast doubles match between four good players whom I know I could furnish. I am afraid actual playing would be sort of a failure unless we had a little more time but we will be governed, of course, by whatever you want. We may come down once before then and get our hand in a little and we can talk about it at that time or you can let me know which you think will be best. Don't werry, we won't let you down.
