Lawrence is overflowing with veterans and it is estimates that there will be 800 veterans who will come to the University for their first time on February 11, the date of the second semester. Dean Js 0. Jones is the dean of the Graduate School so I would suggest that your sonein-law write Dean Jones for it. I would also suggest that his high school transcript be mailed in early so that that can be ppoperly taken care of. ~? | I am sure that your daughter, Patty, will not have much difficulty obteining a stenographic position. The fact that she rates under the Civil Service and works in the 0.P.A. office in Cheyenne will insure her a position, I am sure, I suggest that your sonein-law also write to Dr. Lawrence Woodruff, the Registrar of the University, telling Dr. Woodruff that he is coming to town and that he would like an apartment. The veterans have been renting the apartments of the Sunflower Village. This is out between Eudora and DeSoto and they are lovely apartments, They will have bus service regularly into the University and on a splendid highway. It is only about ten miles ovt. They have rented over two hundred of these apartments to the veterans amd they are going fast. I think they have three hundred more. I believe that if you and your sonein-law act promptly, he andPatty will get fixed up in splendid styles ans Give my congratulations to your daughter and to your fine son-in-law, who is tops in my opinion because he was a discharged marine. C. Allen Director of Athletics . University of Kansas Lewrence, Kansas © Dear Dr. Allen: Our daughter, Pattie, was married in November to a discharged Marine. Her husband, John J. Schmid, is most anxious to enter the University of Kansas under the G.1I-Bill at the beginning of the second semester. Will you kindly give me information regarding the date of the new semester and if it is at all possible to find a. small apartment in Lawrence for the two of them. John is a graduate of the class of "42" of Cheyenne High School and has, the proper qualifica- tions for entrance to the Engineering School at the University. Pattie would like very much to have a stenographic position either at the University or in Lawrence in order to supplement John's allotment as a student. She is now employed as Clerk-Stenographer under Civil Service in the District OPA Office in Cheyenne and retes very good in efficiency. This is asking a great favor of you with all your many duties, but as the daughter of "Fighting Tom" it will mean so much to me to have another member of the family en- rolled in dear old KU. I shall be glad to pay a substantial deposit in order to hold an apartment if you should locate one for the children. Wire me collect if it is at all possible for John to enter KU by the end of the first semester. It was my good fortune to attend Kansas University in the fall of 1942, before I was called to active service. Since then I have been to a lot of places, like most servicemen, including Canada, Alaska, the Aleutians, Russia and Korea. During all my travels tho I never for- got K.U. and the happy days I spent there. I never have met another former Jayhawker while I've been in the Infantry (Airborne) but I do remember meeting one or two fellows when I was in the Air Force who had. been students at Lawrence. I al- so remember a B-24 bomber which had the name "Jayhawker" painted on it. It was shot dow a few days before the war ended but it had a record of twenty-three missions and seven Jap planes to its credit. I later learned that the pilot was a former Kansas student. I've always made it a point to keep up with Kansas in the sport- ing world. It's always a pleasure to hear some boys from the east start talking about their great basketball teams. As T recall the last time a K.U. team went east I believe your boys beat every team they played.(1942-43 season). A buddie and I were talking about the coming basketball season when we were pinned down by Japs last Aug- ust. We intended to see a few games to-gether this season but I'll be seeing them alone because a Jap got him. I sure would lake it if my name could be added to the mailing list of the Rebound. Might find out how some of the old gang made out, who knows? Any way I think you have done a great job and as for your basketball team I hope I reach Stateside in time to see a few games. Maybe see the Jayhawkers win one for my buddie who won't be able to be there. Thanking you, I an, Very truly yours, Up bytes Philip A, Dynan, 37507579, Special Service Co., APO 726 % Postmaster, Seattle, Washington December 6, 1945 Mr. Re Le Dennen, Superintendent Colby Public Schools — Colby, Mansas Dear Superintondont Dennen : I am sorry indeed that I failed to answer your letter sooner, It was just one of those thing, I didn't get around to early enough. - We use powder in boxes and it is much superior to , Liquid. We have been using it in boxes now for two years and we would not think of going back to the solution. The powder aids in drying their feet, but, of course, the feet ( should be thoroughly dry before the boy uses the powder box. : 2 . The Cramer Chemical Company handles the powder and I _. think it is quite reasonable because of the high efficiency that is had by the use of the powder, I happen to be president of the Lawrence Country Club and we are using the powder out there also. We are utilizing the rubber bath tub that we used ‘the liquid in, However, I think that at least a pine box six inches high and three feet square would be much better and to avoid any splinters on the bottom we use a composition paper bottom. You know what I mean, the heavy wallpaper board about three inches to 5/8 of an inch deep and we nail it to the wood and use it as the bottom of the box. I believe you will see | : the efficacy of this type of box. Since it rests on the floor : and has no hard usage, we have had no difficulty with it. October 15, 1945 Jack Dillard, A.S., USNR Navy V-12 Unit, C 318 A Washburn Municipal University Topeka, Kansas ‘Dear Yack: I am appreciative of your interest in writing me regarding our policy concerning the Navy V-12 university boys: for basketball. Yes, Jack, we are definitely — planning on using the V-12 boys in our basketball. They have always been some of our finest athletics and students and I would not think of leaving them out, ‘Will you please tell Stramel, Van Gundy, and Ul#éeh that they are welcome to our campus and to our team. We are practicing now and will continue until the first of November but this will not mitigate any of you boys coming out for the tean. : The football team hore at Kansas is a dandy but we feel that you boys were outweighed and outematched, so it is not a detriment that you lost to a fine team. When you boys come to the campus be sure and drop in at my office and say he@lo as I assure you you will be welcone. With all good wishes, I an, Yours very sincerely, Director of Physical Education, Varsity Basketball Coach FOAsLM Navy V-1l2 Unit Washburn Municipal University October 135, 1945 Dr. Forrest CG. Allen Head Basketball Coach University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear pr. Ailen Day before yesterday, the trainees stationed at the. unit here received their orders stating that we were to be trans- ferred to K. U. onthe lst. of November. This seemed to allot us the full realization of our hopes as Kansas seemed to be the No. l school on our list of schools to be transferred to. Upon the receival of a letter from LLoyd Krone, who played at Washburn last year, stating that Oklanoma would probably not use Navy men because of the long trips they aesired to take, the question immediately arose in our minds, what would be your policy at K,. U. tnis year?" Several of last years team, Stramel, Van Gundy, Ulrich, and myself got tegether and decided to write you seeking an answer to our.queries and Tina out one way or the other so as to ease our worries during tnis, the final week. We were wery sorry about Krone as he is definitely one of the finest players any of us have ever played with or against. We are also wondering when you will begin practice. We are not scheduled to report until che LiP56 of November and wondered if that would eliminate the possibility of coming out for tne team. After last nights game and the terrific beating administered to us, we feel. that you might be a trifle leery and doubtful of Washburn. athletes. You have a wonderful team at the University tnis year. Here's hoping that none of them set tOO bunzed up for basketball, which, wrong as it mignar seem, is usu- ally the case. You would certainly be repsonsible for the termination of some doubting sailors worries if you would instruct ua as to your policy with = -l2z students this year.
