IT called Dr. Lawrence Woodruff regarding what you said and what you should do, and he said that you could apply to your Navel headquarters for ea transfer if you wanted to for medicine or engineering, but he was quite sure that they would not transfer you here for a business set-up because the government does not have. it here. Their specialization is medicine and engineering. | And too, Dr. ‘oodruff said that it is altogether thinkable that they might not send you to the University of Kansas at all, but might send you to some other base. So I am afraid, Johny, that you will heve to talk to your officers down there and find out what possibility and what chances of transfer you might have. Rest assured that we would be delighted to have you, but even the President of the United States earmot do some things. It am sorry that I missed you when you stopped in Lawrence. It would have given we pleasure to have taiked to you personally because I could have explained many things to you in person that it is difficult to write. This one thing I want you to definitely feel - that we want you to cowplete your education here at the University of Kensas. I assure you that there would be no problem if you and I ean carry on our understandings togethes. We have never had any misundsrstendings and we will not have because I know thet you want an education, ea real education, and that is what we want you to have. : With every go0d wish to you, I am Very sincerely yours, Director of Physical Education, FCA:AH Varsity Basketball Coach. I feel terribly guilty in not getting around to see you either at the hospital or at you home, but the press of this business and that hag kept me from doing the things that I most like to do at times. I do want to oxpress to you my sincerest and best wishes in your illness. It just doesn't seem natural when we don"t see you around, but I believe you are doing exactly the thing that is best for you - to rest and give your- self an opportunity to build back up. You spent a lot of energy in behalf of the Athletic Association through all these years, so if you do not show up for quite some time you will be way ahead of then s far as service is concerned. Dr.F.C .Allen, Dep't.of Physical Education, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. Dear Dr.Allen: Your telephone call a couple of weeks ago took me rather by surprise. In fact,I had just finished with a class of soidters and when told to call the Lawrence operator thought it was probably Ben Douglas calling me. Since that time,I have been wondering if there might be an opportunity to work into a permanent position or whether you had in mind a duration job. I would not be interested in the latter. In fact,as I explained to you over the phone,I could not secure a release for a temporary job. A few days before you called I had an opportunity to go with the Red Cross but my President was unwilling to release me, T remember reading in:the paper that Bill Hargiss has gone but of course do not know whether he is on leave with plans to return. As you know,I have coached Track here since 1926. Have also helped with football, and taught both theory and activity classes in our P.E, program, T realize the immediate future in Athletics is very uncertain but believe it will come back strong after the war, The possibilities here seem to be rather limited and I would be interested in making a permanent connection with a larger school. If you have any such openings on your staff I would welcome the opportunity to talk with you regarding same, Yours very truly, leo. Actes G¢.L.Duke Director of Athletics.
