Again we would like for you to be with us as head clinician. The clinic proper will not start until Thursday evening and will be concluded.Friday evening with a game between Emporia Senior High and the Dodge City team. The clinic has been growing in favor each year until it is now necessary to take in more time so as to permit more teams to be seen in action. We now permit each team to play another for a half only and then a new opponent comes in. These exhibition affairs do not count in the 18 game limit. If you can possibly get away for the above dates I am sure that a profitable program can be worked out with your help. Yours sincerely, Janna Chu? I took on baseball in addition to my basketball work and this together with a large number of speaking engagements kept me from answering your letter. I am a little uncertain at the present time of the possibility of getting away on the llth and 12th of December. My basket 11 schedule is not completed and I hesitate to make commitments until I complete my basketball schedule. I certainly will enjoy being with you but I'm sure you can appreciate my situation. If you have someone else that could fill my shoes at the present ——: I assure you I will not feel the least bit offended. I'll be glad to hear from you at your earliest convenience. Last year our attendance was the best that we have ever had and I think that if we can make our plans enough in advance that we can do even better this coming yeare ‘ If you will let me know as soon as possible what week end you will be free, I will try to make arrangements to hold the clinic at that time. Of course we would like to have the clinic as early in the season as possible. It would be of more value to us at that time and we would also get better attendance. Famous Flat Feet: Sinkwich, Louis, Greenberg, Mail Bag: “Did the Dodgers win every game last year? Why expect. the pro basketeers? The Garden has developed and ballyhooed great college stars who now are paid openly. These boys don’t head for the corner saloon for a dozen beakers of beer after a game. Nor do they chew cigar butts between halves, or ‘dump’ ball games. Some of the oldsters did. But these modern pros are decent, clean-minded ex-college kids.”—B. Bime- lech, El Chico, Pompoon and Ladysman, among others, were touted just as highly as Alsab before they began racing as three-year-olds.”—George Sexton, Manhattan. Punching the Bag: It was 15 below zero at Greenwood Lake in the Ramapos the other morning at 6 when Ray Robinson began his road work. The cream Manager Curt Hoffman smeared on Ray’s face to prevent skin-chapping froze solid and set jhis features. Johnny Clark, a middleweight, was Ray’s roadmate. The eyelashes of both froze. After a long run, Ray came back to the cottage just vacated by Joe Louis. He warmed up at the stove and began jigging in tune to phonograph records, “Big Fat Mama,” Chattanooga Choo Choo” and “Searecrow.” It still wasn’t 8 A. M., but Ray craved music. He returned to bed for a couple of hours of reading, and arose at 11 to stow away a gigantic steaming breakfast set before him by Chef Bill Bottoms. Ray looks in the best shape of his sensational career, if our friend, Fritz Zivic (who meets him Friday) is interested. Philosophy Note: Well, Joe Louis and Max Schmeling are in the armed forces of their respective countries. Both are fine men. Both are good citizens, loyal: and brave. Both believe they are fighting for the right. We may have AEFs, to all corners of the world. I wonder just what the odds are on Louis facing Schmeling across the field of battle. If they do 4 (we rg Pane COLLIN ‘ ( ZY meet the Broadway form players and bookies cannot set a price. This is the big “rubber” match. Famous Firsts: Eddie Collins’ first major league game was played at Chicago on Sept. 17, 1906. The newspaper account of the game stated: “Eddie Collins, late of Columbia College of New York City, made his debut today for the Athletics under the name of ‘Sullivan,’—reason for the alias being that he was still attending Columbia College and wanted to keep his amateur standing at that school. It was later found out, and Collins assumed his right name. In the first game Collins showed up well but was a bit nervous though he handled six chances without an error in the field and made one hit off Ed Walsh’s delivery. The White Sox won a tough I1- inning game, 5-4. Walsh bested Waddell in one of their usual good pitching duels.” 4, dhraldiug Fit Guus.
