Dear Burt: Tt was a creat pleasure to receive your interesting letter of April 27. Mrs. Allen received a lovely letter from Ruth = we were delighted to hear from both of you. _Our daughter Mary (not Jane, who lives in Chicago) © has recently returned from California. Ner husband, Lee “Pete*™ Hemilton is being transferred fron Louisville, Ky-, to the Pacific Coast, and Mary has been out there select- ing e« home for the family. She found a place at Carmeleby- the-Sean, and has now gone back to Louisville to get things ready to move. I sincerely hope that you and the Hamilééms may get together occasionally. Dre Elbel left for the service about the middle of March. He was tenporarily stationed at Tulse, but at the present time is at St. Louis. ‘The campus is thinning out very pereeptibly when we look for the male members of the families. Yes, Jim Hitt was called, and Lawrence Woodruff, of the Entomology Department, has taken his place as acting registrar. Lee Gemmell, of the Fxtension Division, has gone, and Wm. H. Shannon, of the School of Business, received orders for duty in the Seventh Naval District. Horace Mason, our publicity director, has gone to the Great Lakes Naval Station, and in our own department Ed Hall, Cliff Nordstrom, and Steve Meade, as well as Carl Jessup, have gone with Tunney's division in Norfolk, Va. John Pfitsch is to be inducted next Wednesday. So you can see that our ranks are thinning out. Henry Shenk and I took over Ed Elbel's clesses when he left, and this in addition to appointment on several faculty committees has made our work rather heavy. — The University authorities anticipate a decrease in enrollment of at least 12%, and it may be more. The Summer Session, however, will be well attended, I believe. The faculty volley ball games are going good every afternoon. Dia sees OFk Neky atlibaieats talc this recreation period. Iam enclosing a copy of the University Daily of April 26, which carries a story on your statements ing physical conditioning. I thought you would be interested in reading this. I would enjoy very mich on opportunity to sit down and cicw the fat with you. I hope the next time you make a cross- country trip that you will be able to stop off at Lawrence #ér @ visit with us. HEADQUARTERS FOURTH AIR FORCE Office of the Director of Physical Training San Francisco, California April 27, 1942 Dr. Forrest C. Allen, Director Department of Physical Education and Recreation University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Doc: This letter has been due for a long time. The press of work since the first of the year, however, has caused me to neglect personal correspondence, I was very happy to hear that all our p. e. majors finally did obtain jobs; they were a deserving, capable group of boys. I believe they will always be a credit to the physical education department and to the University, whatever they do. A casual note from Blbel requesting some information about our program was the manner in which I found out that he had left K. U,t Indirectly I have also heard that Jim Hitt was called in. I suppose many more have gone. My immediate concern, when I heard from Blbel, was for you and Henry Shenk. It must be a terrific load on both of you to carry the entire departmental teaching load. I do hope you don't exhaust yourselves completely. | Saturday, at the California-Standord baseball game, I saw and talked to your brother, who,as you probably know, was recently promoted to the rank of full colonel. He looks fine and is doing a swell job with the Stanford ROTC unit. He is pets 4 ular with the students. ~ ee i ) [Fe a | He told us about Jane and’ her husband coming out here. We are looking forward to seeing them very much. Ruth and I both hope that Jane's coming out will entice both you and Mrs. Allen into a trip out this way this summer. We would love to see both of you. Ruth will be only too glad to help dane find a house--and that isn't easy right now in this area! We are living down near Palo Alto and I telieve your brother said that Jane wants to live somewhere down the Peninsula also. : I suppose K. U.'s enrollment will be hard hit by the war, along ith all other schools, That will probably mean that physi¢al educa- tion majors will be practically eliminated from the department. But the type of thing I mentioned in my talk needs to be done in every school and college for every student. Maybe those academicians back there will now admit that physical education does have a very important place in the life, and the preservation of the life, of the country. Congratulations on your swell basketball season, Doc! That was great. If you have just a few of those boys back next year, I'm sure you'll go all the way to the national championship. Needless to say, I enjoyed seeing Stanford play several times, and was pleased the way they went thru the tournament. I was in Washington, D. C. on December 7th and had planned a stopover at K. U. on the way home. But I received orders on December 8th to report back immediately to Riverside. Our headquarters have been in San Francisco since January. I better close this letter before it becomes a book. Ferhaps we can have a good bull session before this year is over. Better come out to California this summer. We have a lovely place down the peninsula with plenty of room, We would certainly like to have you stay with us there, Please give my best regerds to all the members of your family and to my friends on the faculty. Yours sincerely, EB. Be DEGROOT, JR. Captain, Air Corps Director of Physical Training Fourth Air Force
