Mey 6, 1942. Captain i, B, DeGroot, Jre, Director of Physical Training, Headquarters Fourth Air Foree, ' Sen Prancisco, Californie. Dear Burt: Tt was a creat pleasure to receive your interesting letter of April 27. Mrs. Allen received a lovely letter from Ruth = we were delighted to hear from both of you. _Our daughter Mary (not Jane, who lives in Chicago) © has recently returned from California. Ner husband, Lee “Pete*™ Hemilton is being transferred fron Louisville, Ky-, to the Pacific Coast, and Mary has been out there select- ing e« home for the family. She found a place at Carmeleby- the-Sean, and has now gone back to Louisville to get things ready to move. I sincerely hope that you and the Hamilééms may get together occasionally. Dre Elbel left for the service about the middle of March. He was tenporarily stationed at Tulse, but at the present time is at St. Louis. ‘The campus is thinning out very pereeptibly when we look for the male members of the families. Yes, Jim Hitt was called, and Lawrence Woodruff, of the Entomology Department, has taken his place as acting registrar. Lee Gemmell, of the Fxtension Division, has gone, and Wm. H. Shannon, of the School of Business, received orders for duty in the Seventh Naval District. Horace Mason, our publicity director, has gone to the Great Lakes Naval Station, and in our own department Ed Hall, Cliff Nordstrom, and Steve Meade, as well as Carl Jessup, have gone with Tunney's division in Norfolk, Va. John Pfitsch is to be inducted next Wednesday. So you can see that our ranks are thinning out. Henry Shenk and I took over Ed Elbel's clesses when he left, and this in addition to appointment on several faculty committees has made our work rather heavy. — The University authorities anticipate a decrease in enrollment of at least 12%, and it may be more. The Summer Session, however, will be well attended, I believe.
