It was a pleasure to receive your letter of the 16th instant, and I wish to thank you fer sending the outline of procedure used in checking equipment from the towel room. This will help Henry Shenk end Marvin Sollenberger in their sduinistration of the towel room service. I have written Roy Weinesttel of the Pred Medart Manu- facturing Company about the Goalelii rule books, asking him — to send you a couple of copies for your athletic officer at Fresno. I am sure you will hear from Roy in a short time. I talked to Miss Kenney over the telephone after I received your letter, and learned why you have received no compensation for your correspondence study work. The Chancellor made a ruling, which became retroactive. This is the way it came about. The correspondence study bureau ran out of money a year ago, and they asked far $300 from Raymond Nichols to pay these people and it came to the Chancellor's notice. They dug up a twelve-year-old ruling by the Board of Regents that anyone on the regular payroll could receive no extra money for anything. They dug out that ruling to save themselves $300, although they were charging fees for the courses, as usual, but the fees had to go into University funds. anything either - I way, but being so close I couldn't see the trees é : : : . us ~- I will not get So none of us will That applies to all of got hit the same I an ‘s Nursery, which provides I am in So when people at me, like the American Navy Ruth, and we wish you thout all the youngsters of shooting at them they can't catch up. -here on the Hill, and am also iter for British C Allen had a lovely letter from Although we ere lonesome wi busy that wo ty Chest drive Jayhawk She working on the Methodist Church drive. the Lawrence Children working mothers. rocks ~ instead around we are so doggone charge of the Commi helpine out in the have just finished ® nursery for the children of were here. also chairman of are going to throw rocks at them. Alien Director of Physical Education and Recreation University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Doc, : % We were very glad to hear from you and to learn all about the wed- ding and the other happenings in Lawrence and at the University. Ruth was particularly thrilled,of course, to know that the wedding went so well and that everyone is so happy over it. I have written both John Pfitsch and Maurice Cannady concerning their impending draft call. I am sorry that I cannot use them in this Air Force, but we are not using civilians at all in the Combat Forces; I have to work entirely thru the officer personnel to attmept to carry out this program. I suggested that they both try to get on in the Navy in the capacity of physical directors. Tunney's office is em- ploying 1600 young physical ed majors for this work. They are given a chief-petty-officers' rating which pays $116.00 per month plus all clothes and expenses. I. am afraid that Maurice waited too long to start proceedings on this matter. d. uve nee) I was surprised to learn when I was back there that our men physi- cal education majors (graduates) did not fare better in securing jobs this year. Certainly there were plenty of jobs open this year, and mar- ried men like Ramie Beims, particularly, should have landed a job some- where. I am afraid that that situation in the appointment office still needs some re-vamping. Thanks for enclosing your basketball schedule in your last letter to me. I really want to see that team play this year if possible. They should be vlenty good. The tentative trip to Washington is still"tentative". We have com- posed a proposed physical training program for the Combat Forces and it is now going thru "channels" in Washington. We shovld know in the near future just how far we can go in the matter of physical training for the Air Forces. The men need it, and the need is recognized by higher authorities, but the tremendous amount of time required for technical train- ing of airmen and ground crews, very definitely limits the working day. We're trying to do in one year what Hitler did in nine years--and that is tough, particularly when we have to do a better job. : ihe the, tewe/ roo™% Enclosed is an outline of the method we used ,last year to insure the return of equipment and the payment for equipment lost. The chief essential in achieving success in any system devised in the’ equipment room is daily checking and running down of all equipment and personneYin the room. Best of luck in the coming basketball season and the school year, Doc. (over) September 29, 194. I stopped in several times dur- ing the morning, and Mrs. Hulteen said that she expected you back each time. In the afternoon I got tangled up with my own moving deal (that Hall Bros. was supposed to have done before I arrived!), and didn't finish until even- ing. I had to leave on an early morning train Sunday. In- that I will have to go to:Oklahoma City several times during the year, however, I'll try to schedule one of my trips to coincide with one 6&f your basketball games down there. Will you please send me a basketball sched= ule as soon as they are made up? We received an announcement that Jane had been mar- ried! Congratulations are in order--please extend them to her and her husband if you see them. Also to Mrs. Allen, for I know that she really worked on that match! Miss Kinney, in the Extension Division, asked me to talk to you concerning the Track and Field Correspondence Course. She said that September 15th would be the best time for a change to be made. I imagine that you will want Henry Shenk to take this course over. I t will be a good chance for him to “set his hand in the track and field theory before he starts teaching the course in the second semester. I appreciated correcting the course during the summer, for the extra dough was very useful (or will be when I get it), for our expenses have been rather heavy. I am answering a letter from John Pfitsch inquiring atout possible physical education jobs in the army. Un- fortunately, much as we need them in the Air Corps, there is no authorization for them as yet. I am advising him to apply to the Navy, which is out for 600 trained physical ed men. Ruth and I both miss all you people in Lawrence. I wish we were not so far apart so that we could have a good visit once in a while. You better come 6ut to the Coast next year. Possibly I shall go thru Lawrence on my way to Washington within the next month or so. I shall cer- tainly stop if I do. a Best of luck sand Hehe fon a and ce be Sept. 30, 1941 Mr. B.
