CARLETON COLLEGE NORTHFIELD, MINNESOTA INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS Marshall Diebold, Director of Athletics Assistant to the Dean of the College October 21, 1941 Walter Hass, Football, Track Verl Young, Football, Basketball, Baseball Dr. Phog Allien Coach of Basketball University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Phog: Recently Ralph Cannon of Esquire asked that I prepare an article for his magazine in the form of a defense of “modern basketball." Because my opinion would represent only one point of view, I am taking this liberty of seeking your opinion and cooperation in attempting to make the article not only accurate but representative. Will you please be kind enough to write a brief statement relative to the two questions mentioned below? In this attempted pisce of literary work your statements will be quoted; hence you may like to bear that in mind when answering these questions. Although I mentioned that you should make it brief merely for your own con- venience, your desire to elaborate as much 2s you please is in your own hands. The two questions are as follows: 1. “Does modern basketball require more stamina, better health, and condition than when you played?" 2. "Does modern basketball represent a health hazard?™ Your cooperation will be greatly appreciated. Although I am at a loss to understand why Mr. Cannon asked me to write the article, it possibly is merely the duty of the Secretary of the National Association ofBasketball Coaches to collect the opinions of the coaches of this country and formulate them into an article. Thank you in advance and best wishes for another great season. Sincerely, Marshall Diebold MD.vVs Director of Athletics
