August 26, 1941. Mr. Dell Davidson, 1112 Illinois St., . Lawrence, fansas. Dear Mr. Davidson: I wonder if it will be possible for you to roll the women's hockey field while the ground is fairly danp. Miss Hoover was in the office this morning and suggested that if you could do it now the field would be in much better shape than if we wait until after school starts. @f course, I do not know how much help you have at the present time, but we shall appreciate your taking care of the hockey field at your early convenience. Sincerely yours, Director of Physical Education and Recreation, Varsity Basketball and Baseball Coach. August 13, 1941. Mr. John T. Doyle, c/o Americen Sports Publishing Co., 19 Beekman Street, New York City, N.Y. Dear Mr. ‘Deyle: Doubtless you will receive a tear sheet from Clyde McBride's Sporting Comment as of yesterday, August 12th. But I clipped this out more as a memorandum so it would recall to my mind the necessity of writing you to congratulate you on the most outstanding work perhaps of any man in sports. I say this without fear of flattery or contradiction. Through the long years you have been a sportsman, a high grade gentleman, and an indefatigable worker. It must be a source of great pride and joy to a man when in his mature years he can look back over a wonderful record of accomplish~ ment and friends by the legion. It was perfectly fitting that Walter R. Okeson should give you the entire credit by saying “the only editor was John Tf. Doyle. « + « Hats off to John T. Doyle.“ | | ly sincerest wishes to you for many happy and durably joyous days. Sincerely yours, Director of Physical Education and Recreation, PCA: AH Varsity Basketball Coach. AF, dhaldiug YA dros. Jive. EXECUTIVE OFFICES IS BEEKMAN STREET, NEW YORK August 15, 1941 My dear Dr Allen Thank you so much for sending the cutting from the Star. Do you suppose that there Mr McBride would send a copy? I should say not. So you see how much I am indebted to you, as I should not have know of it otherwise. Anyway, it is a nice tribute, even if it does take a shot at the new book, And I am especially grateful to you for your comment, which, believe me, Dr Allen, I appreciate most highly. While apparently laborious, the guide work was really a labor of love from the beginning, so that at no time has any of it been tiresome. While I could never be paid materially for the time I have spent, the associations it has brought, not to mention memories, have amply repaid me. And in this devotion, my long suffering wife is entitled to a meed Of praise for her patience and forbearance. I am still going on with the Spalding firm--in fact, I am a "vice president"--in a sort of contact capacity; so maybe some day I shall stretch the itinerary and show up in Lawrence to thank you in person for your encomiums. In the meantime, my dear Dr Allen, please accept my renewed thanks, and all all good wishes for Mrs Allen ~.. and yourself. Sincerely a August 14, 1941.
