THE UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER ROCHESTER, NEW YORK . May el, 1941 Dr. Forrest C. Allen Director of Physical Education University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allens Thank you for your kind note of April 14. It arrived during our absence in Florida where I had taken Alice and the youngsters in hopes that she might recover from a winter-—long attack of sinus trouble. The cure was 100% and we all came back to Rochester with a new lease on life. Had an air mail letter from Burt the other day telling about his recent appointment to the Army Air Corps Physical Education and Recreational Service. While of course we are happy that he has fallen into a position which pays such a substantial increase in salary, I am quite upset at the prospect of his leaving your fine leadership. While he is a quiet kid, I know that you have been a tremendous inspiration and influence and I was hopeful that he would be there with you for some years to come. I trust his leaving has met with your approval and that he goes on to the new work "in good standing." While, of course, no one knows how long the present emergency may last, it seems to us here in these parts that four or five years will be a very minimum in which case perhaps we will all be in some sort of service before long. We had looked forward to a brief visit with Burt and Ruth and the expected “arrival, and incidently with the Allens, on the way back to California. Now since Burt has to leave so early and since we are going to get away from here so late, we will probably not see you. However, I look forward to a visit with you some time again in the not too distant future. With kindest personal regards to Mrs. Allen, Bob and the lovely daughter, I am Cordigily yours, » Dudley S. DeGroot Associate Professor
