Allen University of Kansas Lawrence Kansas Dear "Doc", When we used to play golf together at Springfield, you said that you would be glad to have me use your name for a reference at any time. Several years have gone by and I am using your name as a reference. The job for which I am applying is at the State Teachers College at Hyannis, Massachusetts. The pre-requisites are a Master's Degree and five years of teaching in a public school. I received my B. 8. in 1931 and my Master of Educa- tion in 1936, and this is my ninth year of Director of Health and Physical Education at the Chautauqua Central School. Professor Affleck is the one who recommended me to the position, and I hope that I am fortunate enough to receive the appointment. You might be interested in knowing that in the past eight years my basketball teams have won the Sectional Championship of Western New York four times. We haven't had state championship contests for the past nine years. My teams have won 110 and lost 21 in eight seasons. This year we have won both games played to date and I hope to have another Sectional Champion- ship. Normie started in the first grade this year and is enjoying his school work. Mary and I often speak of you, and we would enjoy seeing you again. Her father, Dr. 8S. Stevens, dropped dead last January and her mother is now living with us. Please give our best regards to your daughter Mary. Anything you do in regard to this position at Hyannis will be greatly ap»oreciated. Best wishes to you and your team for the season. Allen University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen: This will acknowledge your letter of January 8. You probably have a copy of the report which I made after 4 working with the le-foot basket. I believe you will find < there some very positive statements concerning the rebound oo are of the ball and the lessened congestion around the basket. This latter fact, of course, reduces the number of fouls because we know from the investigations which have been made by Floyd Rowe that the concentrated area of fouls is around the basket. a I don't know whether it will be possible for me to repeat this work before the next rules meeting or not. However, I shall take the matter up with Dr. Storey and Mr. Masters to see if we can set up the 12-foot basket on one ef our courts. If this is possible, I shall try to get some student to tabulate data on the two points which you suggest. We have had one of the newly-designed backboards put out by Medart. While I have not taken any statistics on this board, I have made many observations and have asked for com- ments from other coaches and many players. The letter to Mr. Weinzettel, a copy of which is attached, gives a resume of this subjective study. I was surprised to note that I could : sit directly behind the board and see the ball go through the e basket. “ AEE eae pelle ot ae peer Hi ei 3 sak ad ie oo eh as Sp a ea TRS SRSIS SS Te a aN ee a It would seem to me that one thing we should do before the Rules Committee meets is to attempt to get the reaction of the country on the cost necessitated by such a change. If this is favorable, then I think there will be no deterrent factor in the way of adoption of the new backboard by the Rules Committee. With best wishes, I am Cordially yours, STANFORD UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF THE DEAN OF MEN C STANFORD UNIVERSITY, CALIFORNIA 0 Pp : December 28, 1939 i Mr. R. E. Weinzettel Fred Medart Manufacturing Company Potomac and DeKalb Streets St. Louis, Missouri Dear Mr. Weinzettel: This will acknowledge your inquiry of December <0. The basketball backboard which you so kindly sent us here at Stanford has been set up on our court. I have had occa- sion to attend several rules interpretation meetings this year. At each of these I have called attention to the back+ board you sent us. Many coaches, players, and spectators have come to see the board. We have left it set up off our court during the games we have played so far this season so that people could see it. The players and coaches have used it from time to time. I have received many satisfactory comments concerning the board and no criticisms of it. It does permit a person sitting directly behind the board to see the ball go through the basket. This is because the basket sits so near the pottom of the board, so from the standpoint of vision from all parts of the bleachers, I believe the board is quite sat- is factory. I might say that I was agreeably surprised. From the standpoint of the players, I think the use of the board is a matter of adjustment. It does not take long for one to become accustomed to these new dimensions. The curved surface of the board, so far as I can tell, has no dif- ferent effect upon the ball than does the flat surface of the ordinary board. | I believe the only serious problem in connection with the introduction of this board is the expense. This is some- thing to which the Rules Committee must of necessity give care- ful consideration. I am not now sure whether it would be ad- visable to permit the use of this board and the present 4 x 6 packboard. You can see, therefore, that the whole problem is one of expense in the change of equipment. Cordially yours, (signed) JOHN W. BUNN John W. Phog Allen Kansas University lawrence, Kansas Dear Phog, We have a poy down here on the high school basketoall team by the name of F. R. Bennett, jr., that looks like a good Kansas University prospect. He is only a Junior, sixteen years old but is five feet ten or eleven so should grow another two inches before ready for col- lege. He is one of those boys that looks lazy and slow on the floor but seems to always be in the right place on the court. To date this year, he has scored about forty percent of the points made by the Ottawa team. I do not know whether true or not but one of the high school boys was telling me that no op- ponent who he is supposed to guard has made a field goal this year. In addition to the above he has averaged ninety five in his first two years in high school. Wherever he might go to school he will not need work nor fi- nancial assistance. My only interest is that he go to Kansas to school so thought you might be interested, Southern California came to Colorado after his cousin this year but I would like to see this boy stay in this country.
