CARLETON COLLEGE NORTHFIELD, MINNESOTA MARSHALL DIEBOLD DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS RESIDENT HEAD OF MEN’S DORMITORIES March 4, 1938 Dr. Allen University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen: The enclosed questionnaire indicates the type of material which I am sending to all the secretaries of officials organizations with the hope of securing the nationwide opinion from these officials regarding their impression of basketball and its problems. This. year at the "Officials Panel" I am planning to use the arbitrators as part of the discussion group and with the cooper- ation of Nick-Kearns we are almost assured of between twenty and twenty-five officials being present at the meeting. Furthermore, I am asking permission of George Edwards to admit the officials to our meeting on the particular day that we have the"Officials Panel." Using the words of Nick Kearns "Thank God you're one coach who has the brains to realize that the officials should sit in on a panel, We have no particular interest as to whatour material is or what our future is to bring in the win or lose column. We definitely can give you facts as to the abuses of this game, such as coaches definitely teaching blocking and charging, when the rules provide that the boys. shouldn't even have these things in their minds." It is very apparent thet the officials will appreciate the opportunity to have their say. I thought you would be interested in the comments above because this year at the National Association of Basketball Coaches' meeting to be held in Chicago, April 4&5, there no doubt will be lengthy discussion not only regarding basketball rules but the officials as well. ms Sincerely yours, a es 2 ed Marshall J.
