, denuary 17, 1946 Dean George Baxter Smith School of Education Dear Dean Smith; . I would like to recommend that advanced football, bisted as course number 82, be advanced to the 100 level, I would suggest the number 182, This course will be taught by Mre Henry Shenk. We feel that there will be much demand from the veterans who expect to teach in high school and need the advanced worke Also, there is remedial soil physical examination, listed as number 90. Both Henry Shenk and Red Strait took this as graduate work at the tiniversities of Wisconsin and Iowa, re- spectivelye I would*suggest that we raise this course to the — 100 level, giving it the number rts so that course will get graduate erm sts There is a great need for a course in officiating major sports and games. Many boys with graduate degrees teach in high schools but do not coach. They could render a great service. to the school systems by having talents that would enable them to . referee football and basketball games, as well as officiate at track meets and umpire baseball games, We have few good officials. Also, many of our coaches are asked to officiate in other communities, while they are coaching a school. Just because a coach has been a player is no indication that he is an official, This leck of experience proves embarrassing many times to an excellent coach who is a poor official. This is because he has had no laboratory experience, The laboratory experience that we propose would be officiating in these intramural - football and basketball games, and certainly intramural officiating is not of the highest class.in this favored university. It would be a real service to all concertiéd and the teachers here would supervise the officiating, as well as the teaching of the course, I respective- ly suggest that we offer a new course under the title "Officiating Major Sports and Games", ume course number would be 112. If later along in this semester we feel thet more graduate -eourses are needed for summer session, I suggest that we offer either one of these two courses, M194, Content and Method of Physical Education, three hours, or 202, — and Administration of ~~ Educa= tion, three hours. | Sincerely yours, 7 Director of Physical Education, FCA: MF Varsity Basketball Coach.
