Divine National Representative for Pacific Coast I am in receipt of a letter from Professor Mix relative to the nursery business and understand that you are representing the SCF Committee in his absense. I believe that he will be back at Lawrence by the l2th of September. He suggests that I drop you a line. I judge that he has communicated to you the fact that the nursery at Foxhill known as the Jayhawk nursery is to be closed. The British for some reason do not seem disposed to dis- close the reason for the closing but intimate that.there are very good reasons, evidently of a military character. The Fund in England has suggested that your Committee transfer its allegiance to the Broadgate Nursery at Barnstaple L a splendid nursery caring for a group of young evacuees Blitzkrieg at Plymouth. It was previously sponsored by arnstable, Massachusetts with a gift of some $10;000.° The latter owever, was not for the duration but an outright gift making it difficult for us to ask them to continue the aid inasmuch as we accepted with a very clear understanding that there would be no further commitments. Qi Former Governor Henry J. Allen, who was. our. Commissioner to Englend and who is greatly interested in the nursery project, is a summer resident at Barnstable, Hyannis to be exact. He would like to see Lawrence accept Captain Gracey's suggestion and take on the project allowing recognition for what Barnstable, Massachusetts has done. I think, however, that it should be a distinctly Jayhawk Nursery because the British are very anxious to have your ancient and honorable bird prominently displayed and keep the Kansas The child must be given the means requisite for its normal development both maferially and spiritually—Declaration of Geneva THE AMERICAN MEMBER OF THE SAVE THE CHILDREN INTERNATIONAL UNION Registered with the President's War Relief Control Board, Registration No. 2, For Relief Overseas. Professor Mix advises that he does not know just what support will be secured from your local War Fund. DEAN, SUPERINTENDENT Lawrence, Kansas 18 August 1944 Dr. Forrest C. Allen University of Kansas Department of Physical Education Lawrence, Kahsas Dear Dr. Allen I am enclosing the correspondence you sent me which you have had with Dr. Mix. The matter has been call- ed to the attention of Ruben Fox, chairman of the bud-= get committee of the Community Chest. He tells me that the proper waf to ask for the placing of the Jayhawk Nursery project on the Chest list is to make app- lication in the approved manner. Blanks may be secured at the Chamber of Commerce office on which the desired information is listed. Since the dead line for filing was the 15th of August, it wotdd seem that there is no chance of getting it done this year. As to the poss- ibility of having the money allocated from the Nation- al War Fund, that is a different matter and I have no idea as to proceedure on this. I'm glad to have been of some small service to you but doubt that anything has been accomplished. Please feel free, Dr. Allen, to call on me for help at any time. I'm always glad to give a hand to your efforts as it is always something very much worthwhile, With the best of personal regards, I am Cordially yours, — at te Clifford D. Dean. August 3, 1944. In the next week or ten days I will make a survey of the key members of the Community Chest. I do not know what can be done because that sum is rather a staggering figure, I fear, for some of the members of the Chest committee. Before I go much further in this, however, I would like for you to write me and tell me what sia you raised from the faculty and what sum from the tom. I made a small contribution, but I do not know from what source the money came. I learned, did I not, that Henry J. Allen, or some source in the state, met tije same sum -that we raised. Twould like to know more about it so that I could present it in the best light. I am very sympathetic to this Jayhawk Nursery, | but I am afraid that many of the members will shy from it unless it is put up in the very best light possible. If the members of the Community Chest could be shown that there is quite an income or nearly enough to carry it over with an added incentive, I am not sure but what we could gain some friends. However, it will be a problem. I will do the very best that I can under the conditions. Trust that you are feeling well. Our regards to Mrs. Mix. Berger George Hedrick John Brand George Lowman Pearl Carpenter M. N. Penny Mrs, Caryl Dodds Mrs. A. B. Weaver A. #. Woestemeyer The meeting was called to order by the president, Mr. Aszman. He stated that the reason for the meeting was outlined in his letter which was mailed to the Board of Directors together with the. minutes of the meeting of November 19th. The Chairman of the Budget Committee, Mr. Fox, was called upon to present a picture of the overage of the National War Fund in two different ways: Plan No. ] and Plan No. 2. Mr. Fox remarked that Mr, Weaver favors Plan No, 1 and that the Budget Committee recom- mended and adopted Plan No. 1. After consideration and discussion, it was decided by common consent to abide by the motion which covered Plan No. 1 and which was adopted at the last meeting. Copies of both plans are attached herewith am become apart of the minutes on file in the office. Mr. Fox said he had received a letter from the Community Ser- vice League, a group which sponsors entertainment of the service- men, Signed by Mrs. Stockton as chairman and Mr. Woestemeyer as treasurer, requesting an allotment of $250.00 per month for the first ten months and $150.00 for the last two months, making a total of $2,800.00, Mr. Fox had canvassed the members of the Budget Com- mittee and they recommend to the Board that this request be granted. Mr. Fox moved that this request be granted, seconded by Miss Carpenter. Motion carried. The matter of the honor roll for the servicemen was brought up and Mr. Brand suggested that there were two plans to be considered for financing this project. One that an organization might be formed to conform to the Constitution. It was felt necessary that some action be taken to reveke the former motion of the previous meeting. Miss Carpenter moved, seconded by Mrs. Weaver, that the action of the Board, November 19th, be revéked : in connection with the erection of an honor roll, This action being as follows: "Mr, Woestemeyer moved that an appropriation up to #1,000.00 be made out of the Community Chest General Funds to finance the project". Motion carried. Mr. Brand then suggested that the Community Service League include in their project the building of such a sign board, or roster, and ask for the money from the Community Chest. ‘irs. Weaver sugsested that the $700.00 fire works fund be released in someway and used for this purpose. Mr. Prend moved that the President of the Community Chest im- mediately present a request to the governing body of the Merchants Bureau to erect a memorial roster to the servicemen in Dourlas Co. and that upon their acceptance of the responsibility, the 4700.00 fire works fund now in the Community Chest Treasury be paid to tir Merchants Bureau for the purpose. Seconded by Mr. Eby. Carried. Mr. Lowman moved that the vote be made unanimous on the above moti. Not car: ied, Mr. Brand read a letter from Dr. Allen from the Red Cross rela- tive to Christmas bags for the boys in sick bay at the University Naval Training Schoo},and it was turned over to Mr. Fox, Chairman of the Budget Committee, for their consideration and recommendation.
