A ; First Annual Lawrence Community ee Lawrence, Kansas November 16, 1940 Dear Fellow Faculty Workers of the Chest Campaign; (Bek ) Gerald Johnson, an editorial writer on the Baltimore Sum and & collaborator in the writing of important biographies and American history, writes in November Harpers of 1940 a thoughte provocative article called, "To our Thirty-Year-Olds." In the three parts of the article Mr. Johnson sets forth firstly, that our “picnic is really over." He points out that we never "miss the water 'till the well goes dry." Secondly, he deals with the wealmess of democracies--"France wasn't worth it" so the young thirty-year-oldster Frenchmen thought. Thirdly, he warns us of impending disaster; that he is not sure but that our thirty-year- oldster Americans are soft. That might apply to the thirty-year-oldster, but not to this group of faculty who took hold of this First Annual Lawrence Community Chest Drive and put it over with an emphatic bank Our estimated share on the Hill was $1000.00. This morning, with a few belated returns still coming in, our total has reached the pleasing and unexpected amoumt of $1554.50. I desire to congratulate each and every one of youl§ people who took this responsibility and acquitted yourselves with distinctione I am appreciative of your splendid teamworke From many many sources f hear that the Lawrence merchants and towns people are more than gratified at the sigable and generous donations to this very worthy causee It is manifested again that the Town and Gown of Lawrence cooperate efficiently and loyally when a real challenge is presented. To this winning band of Gideons' I thank you for your effortse Sincerely yours, Chairman, University Committee FCA:lg
