I am not at all surprised that he is in serious scholastic difficulty. I believe that there is‘a serious emotional disturbance, although I do not have the kmowledge of just exactly what the difficulty is. Doubtless it is an inferiority complex that troubles him. When he came out for basketball he was the butt of jokes from his freshman teammates. He has very little athletic ability, but he represents himself to the boys as a star player. I think this is similar to his state of mind regarding his studies. - I will be happy if I can make any contribution in helping this boy get straightened out. Sincerely, 3 Director of Physical Education and Recreation Foa/pg Varsity Basketball and Baseball Coach THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES To... Doever.F. C0. MID~SEMESTER REPORTS Please plan your work now so you can make your mid-semester reports not later than November 11, Every year a few instructors put off some examinations till 4% is too late to grade their papers in time for prompt reports, Late reports invariably cause our office extra work, which results in a very decent degree of irritation, Will you LEASE be very prompt in this matter. DR, GILBERT ULMER We are glad to weloome Professor Ulmer to his new work as Assistant Dean, He was chosen for this position because he combines, to an unusual degree, good scholarship, fine teaching ability, and an understanding of and sympathy with youth, We predict that he will not only enjoy his work but that he will also be thoroughly enjoyed by both the students and faculty of the Collese. & 42: 2% "Who wants to be born into a perfeot world? Lawson : College of Liberal Arts Frank Strong Hall Campus ‘Thank you very much for your communication of the 10th instant regarding the laxity and negligence of one of our women members in checking absences from her classes. While I'm not happy to receive such criticism, it is a helpful thing and I*ve made it a point to call to the attention of our teachers the failure that happened last springs It is only by these check-ups that corrections may be - ie made of faults of heretofore. ; Assuring you of our: desire for efficient cooperation I am Sincerely yours, Director of Physical Education ad Recreation FCA/pg Varsity Basketball Coach THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES LAWRENCE OFFICE OF THE DEAN October 10, 1941 Dr. Forrest C. Allen Department of Physical Education My dear Dr. Allen: Awhile ago a student, whom I know very well and in whom I have utter confidence, said that there were times when the instructars in the gym classes are careless about calling the rolls, with the result that a great many students absent themselves from some of the work. Criticism was made specifically of some of the women's classes last spring, when in the particular class mentioned, there were large numbers of absences on Friday. I pass this on to you for whatever it is worth. It may not be a general thing, but in the circumstances, I have to believe that a particular instructor in at least a particular class was very careless last year about checking up on the Friday attendance. THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES OFFICE OF THE DEAN LAWRENCE October 10, 1941 Dre Forrest C. Allen Department of Physical Education My dear Phog: Thank you so much for showing me the correspondence with Mr. Browne. It is very interesting. I have sometimes thought that you and I had much in common, for both of us find ourselves so frequently trying to buck the crowd and its accepted practices. Sometimes I get very tired of what seems to be the everyday fight to maintain decent standards. Sometimes I feel like turning the responsibility over to others, telling myself that I have done my share of it,and now it is someone else's turn to carry on; and then I realize that that would be cowardly and that I could do it only by forfeiting my self-respect. I hope you will continue to stand for the things in athletics for which you have always stood. Good luck to youl Sincerely yours, <3 Paul Be.
