Friend Doctor:

Have just received your letter and was certainly glad
to get your answer. While you stated that you were enroute to New York, Etc,,
I envied you and watched the papers for game results but the locals don't. carry
them so I was disappointed.

The "guest" cohumn that I asked you for is still welcome
as, due to the holiday furloughs, we did not deem it advisable to start the
series until after they hed ended.

Also, the start of our heacetenl leagues was postponed
until now. Se, if you have time and will do it, a column on "How basketball
better prepares a soldier for his duty" or something like that, will be welcomed

and timely. Qur leagues start January 1§ and will run until March 10.

Please don't think I am insistent but on the other hand
am solictious because I really didn't know that "Doc Allen" km was so widely
known until now. Many men down here, interested in basketball, mention _ name
and proudly I have shown them my autographed copy of "My Basketball Bible", which
I prize very highly.

So if you ean contribute, I sure will appreciate about
250, or more, as soon as it is convenient for you.

Chose your own topic. I know tt will be good and instruc-
tive. Also, it will add mech prestige to my column, which will include Ed Wray,
Walter Winchell, Kate Smith, Pegler, and several others. Yours will be the only
one on basketball, I have one on all sporte and most other professions.

Thanks for your letter, Doc, and I hope I ,m not asking

right arm of the elemental man who swung vielously to fell the nine, to p

with each others Through the hundreds and thousands of years that men
have been clutshing at eavh other's throats in mortal combat, this game of
contest and conquest has been going ome The man who wrote the rules of

The fellow who observes these ‘is a's a sportsman, so to apents the
men who does not is a mucker,. So we have veneered civilized society with a
inhibitions, and in our society we have said that the man who does not follow
these rules is not a good sportsmane He does not belongs The man who follows
these rules we cheer for hime The athlete who breakes these rules we jeer
at him or shun hime |
Why do we cheer for an athlete who executes an exceptional feat of
skill? Simply because through these hundreds and thousands of years that
men have been struggling we admire this struggle to such a degree that we
struggle with theme We admire it besause whee we sit on the sideline we are

playing the game in our own mind's eye in the same manner as are the men on a
the fields The spectator is a participant because he takes gidese His cheering ‘ |
and partisanship is a sure symptom that he is in the games

 
 

All of our great national games at present have developed ina
big way fror previous werse Professional baseball received its impetus from
the Civil Ware Millions of men in amy camps played One Old Cat and Duck
on the Rocke When they returned home, jobs were scarce and many men wore
out of employment. Consequently, the promoters started leagues and soon these
expert continued in the game. Leagues were formed and professional basee
ball was on its ways. The World war revivified baseball and established profe=
—essional football. As we look back we find that the Civil War developed

professional baseball and the World War revivified professionel tmseball and

 

developed professional football, What will this great peace-time draft,
thet has called so many men to the colors, develop in the way of a new profese
sional game? Will it be professional basketball in a big wey as professional
baseball and football are now played? It does not look as if this will be a
short wntis Doubtless the youth of our Nation will all definitely be in service
in the next year for a period of three or four yearse

Since this is basketbe1l season, perhaps a short review on "How
Basketball Better Prepares a Soldier for his Duties" may be timely.

condition than/any other of our national games, Running, jumping, leaping,
vaulting and climbing are the fundamental activities of mane Four of these
fundamental activities are in the geme of beskethell, There are
many inhibitions in the game of basketball that are necessary for a soldier
to learns ie pass at angles and run in curves. It is not necessary to have a
fast man in basketball but preferably a quick and an agile player is desirables
The footwork in basketball is oemuredio to that in boxing, handball and tennis.
I have also generetty fod that a man who is a good basketball player can easily

acquire the movements of the baseball players

Dre James Neismith, inventor of basketball, who came to the
University of Kansas in 1898 and taught here until his death on November
28, 1959, said of basketball, "It is a game easy to play but difficult to
masters" So liere is your challenge, you men of the Ninth Division, Fort
Bragg, North Carolina, soe if you oan master this great game that a modest
man originated for 18 troublesome athletes at Springfield College, way back
in 1891.

Young Naismith, left an orphan at eight years of age in Almonte,
Canada, was raised by an old bachelor uncle, Peter Naismith. In early youth
youmg Naismith fod that necessity was the mother of invention, Those

 

rugged northmen did much skiing and skating. Naismith, having no money, took
two old files and clamped them between wooden supports for his first pair of
-Skatese ile was always an inventive genius, a noble gentleman, a generous
competitor but a tough man to whips

One June day in 1926 I sat with Dre Naismith under a spreading : :
Cemadian Maple at Bennie's Corners in Almonte, Canadee Hore I met Uncle Peter
who reared young Naismithe I even saw the casket which Uncle peter, after the
fashion ot Canadats frugal pioneers in their northem woods, had skillfully
built and polished so that it would be in readiness for the time which would
inevitably overtake hime Of late, Uncle Peter had taken to sleeping in his
casket-=perhaps to get accustomed to a * ol.

& great challenge are worthy to be great leaderse A man who could claim |
that group of contemporaries for friends could not have been an ordinary mang
Robert Tait McKenzie, Dr. Luther /Gulick, his classmates, Anos Alonzo Stagg and

You will recall that I brought Paul Turner to the University |
to see you early in the summer. At that time I planned to
get Paul work here in Kansas City with the Sheffield Steel
Corperation. You thought perhaps your friend R. Le Gray
would be able to help us out, but I was unable to contact him.
Mr. Elmer Lynch, who is Mre Grays assistant, is a neighbor of
mine and I was able to set Paul a job through him.

Mr. Petra and me who are with the J. Ce. Nichols Companies

and are both Kansas University men, put Paul to work for their
company for about a month early in the summer and then he went
out to Sheffield Steel where he is still employed. He has
saved enough money to take care of his tuition and books. §0
if you will be able to give him some sort of an odd job around
the university, I think this boy will pay dividends.

We are all very much interested in Paul and are hoping that
he will develop: into a good man for Ke Ue He has made a good
recorde He is a good average student. He has a good person-=-
alitye He's willing to work and can be depended upon.

We are hoping that this boy will not disappoint us.

folk dance festival, but thinge did not work out as
satisfactorily as we had hoped for lest year and
we have not promoted another one for the reason that
the demand was not as great as we thought it would bee

Wiss Hoover and Miss Stapleton attended the
Cheyenne Mountain School this sumer under the direction
of Dre Lloyd Shaw, where they learned square dancings
They have been having square dance parties on Friday
evenings. If you are interested I would suggest that
you write Miss Hoover, or cone up and have a talk with
her about it,
