Wayne explained to me the practice of your fine corporation in handling these long distance station-to-gtation calls. I told Wayne infatigably that I never extended the slightest notion that the Bell people were in league with gamblers or any fellows not on the beam. : With my poor voice at Rotary I was sleoeihne to impress the Rotarians in Kensas City with a lack of any supervision whatsoever that the colleges of America activated themselves against the gamblers,’ The deplorable situation is due to the fact that the gamblers are making much money out of the . racket of betting on college games and there is no foree in the college organizations to combat it. I have been trying to awaken the public to the very apparent danger of intercollegiate athletes being a dead dodo in ten years. Allen University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Phog: As you prubekls remember, I stepped out of ny coaching job at Wyandotte High School at the beginning of the war and went into industry. Financially, I am better off than if I had stayed in the teaching game, but I always felt that the time would come when the defense job would be finished and I would be forced to go elsewhere. 7 I am at that cross-road right now. Without a. P.H.D., I can't find whet I want in industry. Down deep in uy heart, I want to get back into coaching. I have been wondering whether it would ever be possible to do some coaching at a University while studying for that advanced degree. Sincerely yours, ~ Director of Physical Bducation Varsity Basketball Coach ‘} PCA:GH HEADQUARTERS SECOND AIR FORCE Colorado Springs, Colorado 50 October 1945 Dr, Forrest C, Allen Varsity Basketball Coach University of Kansas Lewrence, Kansas Dear Dr, Allen, The other day I had a little talk with Bob Hendren about returning to school. It appears that Bob has several offers from various schools such as Purdue, Minnesota, Washington State, ete,, and still is undecided as to where he would like to go. His offers are very attractive and alot of schools are offering him quite a sum of money which would be pretty hard for him to turn down, Hendren just turned 21 not so very long ago and has a great future shead of him, naturally he wants to go to some school in which he can make a name for himself. Ilo doubt-he could do that no matter where he matriculated which he proved through his athletic, achievements here with the Second Air Force in both football and basketball, In my opinion Doc.,3ob needs to talk to a convincer and I'm sure if you could talk to him sometime it would help alot, I know the money situation has been very attractive but I tried to explain to him that money isn't everything and that it is the education he would receive and the contacts he would make through basketball and football that is important, Bob has received all sorts of publicity here and he doesn't quite see it that way. It would be a shame to pass up this boy because I'm positive you can make an AlleAmerican out of him three years ina row, As far as the financial situation is concerned you will know what to do about that and how to talk to him, Please get this boy-he is terrific. By the way Hendren is a Sgt, now, I can't understand why Cpl, James Kane didn't answer your letter, In my opinion he is another one of your battlers-tall, rangy, lots of fight, and above all a swell kid. He left Cuba unexpectedly before I could talk to him, However, he appeared very much interested and talked as if he would like to play under you. If you know someone in Chicago that could contact him, and sell him on Kansas University I'm sure it would help. In the meantime I will drop him another letter and have it forwarded to him wherever he may be, For 211 I know he may be out of the army and this would be the proper time to get in touch with hin, Cpl. Kane just finished high school before entering the service, and like Bob he has a great future and shouldn't miss the opportunity to profit by it. It almost makes me shudder to think that these two boys would get away because they are your type of ball pleyers, and I know they would give you two or three championship clubs with some additional help. ‘when Charlie, Snelly, Dixon, and a few others come back we want to do some pushing around and show these other schools that K.U. is still tops. And I hope we will all be there by the fall of 1946, Give my regards to Mrs, Allen and the boys. If I can help out in any way please let me know. ‘With kindest regards I remain, Very sincerely, | RAY 4 EVANS and, Les, Air Corpse Asst, Phy.Trng,. Officer December 14, 1945 9 _ Lt. Ray Re. Byans-0587736 ° 1109 East St. Vrain Colorado Springs, Volorado - Dear Rays <, na I got your lovely Christmas card this morning and I have greatly enjoyed it I assure you. pay | We are leaving this afternoon for Kansas City, where we play “ensas State tonight and the winner of Nebraska va Missouri University tomorrow night. I have been carrying your letter, which you wrote me on the 30th of October, around in my pocket. I had it in Kénsas City the other day when’ I talked to Tom Vancleave, and then I passed it along to Bobby Allen, who has been here on a two-weeks' leave due to a cesarian operation on his wife, Jean, and a fine eight-pound baby boy, Robert Earl Allen, jr. The baby arrived two weeks agoe Bobby read avidly all the fine things you had to say about Bob Hendren and Cpl. James fone. I certainly would like to have both of those boys here and I agree with you that we are going to have to do something very definitely to convince our better boys that there is still good places — to go in the States without just making it a straight pro proposition. You tell Bob Hendren that I want to see him and have a . talk with him. Iwill even go to the point of going to see him, if you will let me know when he is apt to get out. Better still, if he would be coming this way, I think I could arrange to have some good friend take care of his transportation for a visit to us. I- don't know how we will do that, bu* you talk to Bob and find out when he is apt to be discharged so that we may see him, I am writing Sgt. Bob ‘a letter and sending you a carbon copy of it. We vare rather expecting to see you this week end but had conflicting rumors that you might, or might not, play another game before New Year's. ee 7 : o With every good wish to you and assuring you that wé have deep admiration for you and the fine attitude that you have assumed, I am 2 Sincerely, 7 Director of Physical Education, FCA: MF _ Varsity Basketball Coach.
