January 5, 1943. Lieut. (jg) W. U. Howell, USHR, Asst. to Director of Naval Officer Procurement, 217-227 Camp Street, New Orleans, Louisiana. Dear Lieutenant Howell: _ I have just returned with the University of Kansas basketball team from a swing through the Bast, playing at Buffalo, New York City, Philadelphia and St. Louis. Upon my return I found your inquiry regarding Howard George Engleman. I have filled out the blank in due form, but I feel that I would like to write a letter oqptanining aaglanen*s outstanding personality and trustworthiness. Howard Engleman graduated at Arkansas City High School and entered the University of Kansas as a freshman. [I have been very close to him during his four years of undergraduate work. I was his edvisor on many confidential matters. I was also his varsity basketball coach and employed him to do various types of work for me. I found him thoroughly dependable, honest and elways loyal to the nth degree. He had no bad habits that I know of. He did not use tobacio or alcoholics, he was clean of speech and manner, and he had an uncanny way of making friends. He had an unusual sense of humor and a fine intellect. His physique is attractive and his personality and manner of approach are inviting. Engleman was a leader on the campus and served as president of his class in the School of Business. Dean Stockton has often ee ee ae eek. es ee men he had in his college. He married a lovely girl, and I know of no one thing that should detract from his being seriously con- sidered as excellent officer material for the United States Navy. ‘Director of Physical Education, PCA:AH Varsity Basketball Coach.
