INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS Dr. F. C. Allen, Director of Physical Education, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kan. Dear Dr. Allens: It was mighty kind of you to send the note of congratulations. Your thoughtfulness is deeply appreciated. You have always done such expert jobs of coaching your teams that I must admit considerable satisfaction accompanies each of the smell number of victories we are able to register. I feel that your work this year was not an exception to the rule for with a group whose ability was somewhat below those of recent years you had them in the running despite a poor start. I can't help complimenting you on the changed attitude during the last two or three seasons. It seems as if our teams put up as hard fights and as good exhib- itions as formerly but the relationship between both the players and the coaches has been of the highest order. Among friends victory loses none of its sweetnessiwhile defeat is robbed of some of its sting. : The fervent wish is mine that neither I nor my players will do anything to hinder the development of this fine spirit, and I hope that it may be absobed more and more by followers of both teams. Congratulations to you for such a thorough job in administration of the Fifth District play-offs. HAUSER ATTORNEY-AT-LAW DEAN BUILDING MARION, KANSAS September 13, 1938 Mr. Forrest Allen Athletic Department University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Doc: I am advising you that Jim Ecker, the boy whom I have previously written you about, will be in Lawrence about the 14th or 15th. I have explained to Jim the situation as I was informed from your letter and that there was no assurance that he would receive a job but, in all probability, if he went to you, you would do whatever is possible to secure employ- ment for him. Jim wants to go to the University and he is by no means a tramp and anything you can do for this boy, I will certainly appreciate. With very best personal regards, I remain, Very truly yours, Le HAROLD M. HAUSER ATTORNEY-AT-LAW DEAN BUILDING MARION, KANSAS August 25, 1938 Mr. Forrest Allen University of Kansas Athletic Dept. Lawrence, Kansas Dear Doe: I am writing you in regard to the placement of a young man who graduated from Marion High School this last Spring. At the present writing, I have his consent to attend the University if a job is available for him. His name is Jim Ecker and, in my opinion, he is, without a doubt, the potential outstanding athlete that Marion High School has ever produced. I hesitate to recommend any athlete for a job merely because he is an athlete and have never before attempted to secure a placement for an athlete at the University of Kansas but, under the circum- stances, I am convinced that Jim Ecker has more possibil- ities of becoming a great athlete than any high school graduate I have ever known or have read about--notwith- standing Ralph Miller of Chanute. I can not be too affluant in my praise for this boy and his ability as a basketball: player is unsurpassed as a youngster capable of being trained. He plays the style of game which you yourself would love to see and, as best explained, he is rugged, tough and quick as a cat and this is coupled with a remarkable eye for the basket in any position. So much for his ability as a basketball player. Now as a football player, he is a remarkable receiver of passes; his offensive play is as well as can be expected with the training he has had in blocking. What a good coach could do with him would be marvelous, 1 am sure. His defensive play is, likewise, qualified as good, under the coaching he has had, and the remarkable thing about it is that his development could be so positive that he could be made one of the most outstanding ends Kansas has ever had. Mr. Forrest Allen ~2- Aug. 25, 1938. He stands about six feet or a little more, at the present time, and weighs about one hundred seventy pounds, tough as a boot. Now to top this off, this boy is a straight "A" student and one of good moral character. As I have said before, I have never recommended any athlete to you. This boy, in my opinion, is a potential great athlete and with the training he would receive under you and the present football staff would make him just that. This boy has offers from all the Kansas Conference Schools and from two schools outside the State. If you are ina position to give this boy a placement, I want to know what the job is and how much it will pay so that I may give him the exact picture so that he may not be disappointed upon going to the University. I would like this information at your very earliest convenience. I am sending copies of this letter to Gwyn Henry and also Ad Lindsy. With very best personal regards, I remain, Very truly yours, HAROLD M. HAUSER HMH:LP ce: Gwyn Henry Ad Lindsy
