Copy of Confidential Communication to the Appointment Secretary Stanford University, Calif. February 18, 19% Mr. Edward Burton DeGroot, Jr. has taught in Vacaville Union High School during the past two years (August 27, 1934 to February 18, 1936). He has discussed with me the prospects of advancement in a professional way from time +o time. I have advised him that should a position open up which would be a distinct improvement over the present prospects in Vacaville, I should be most pleased to issue him practically as good a recommendation as I have ever given any teacher. However, I have advised him that I should regret his enna school unless he found a position which was a distinet improvement over present one. : Mr. DeGroot combines the ability to teach History with the ability to coach teams in athletics to a surprising degree of skill. I should rate him as very good in all of those things which go to make up a wide-awake aps nis. teacher and I know that the community here is thoroughly satisfied wit! ability +o turn out teams which represent this school creditably in all the branches of athleties. We have won more than our share of championships. However, I feel that Mr. DeGroot'’s influence has been more important along the lines of cultivating the true sportsman-like attitude and developing the interests of students along all the lines of Physical Education.
