After weeks of eager waiting, we finally pulled away frem Lawrence at five minutes past ene e'cleck, December 23, 1940, en the Santa Fe ‘Streamliner. Gar #hves shert stop wes in Kansas City, where we were met by many phetegrapherss [ere we each received a Saturday Evening Pest which contained a story of Dre Allen entitled “ive the Ball te Junior." This was a very intabasttne siery wet ebeout ie National playeffs in Kansas City last year, and talking of ‘Dre Allen's history as basketball coach. After we left Kansas City the beys kept themselves wine by playing cards, reading, studying, and watching eut the windows. There were several little children on the train which kept us very amused, asking for ae autographs, and cutting up in generale At 6:15 e'cleck seme of us experienced anether thrill when we hed eur ennee oe the liner, traveling approximately ninety miles per hour. For many of us this was our first meal in a diner. | All the time we had been traveling through very beautiful country, but by new it had become teo dark te see. After dinner we again turned te our cards ard beoks te await the arrival in Chicago. We arrived in Chicage at approximately 9:30 pe me, and after me strugglimg with our many begs (and boxes of glyce), we arrived at the Hotel Allerton. Vance Hell 4fter being shown to eur reoms we went for a brisk walk, Dean Nesmith, our trainer, setting the pace. After the wal many of us had a malted milk before retiring. At 11:20 pe me, Bill Hogben, my room mate, and I tumbled into our beds, two very tired, but very happy young mene We left Ann Arbor, Mich., Christmas morning. at 7:00 o'clock. Dean found it very hard to rouse the boys thet early in the morning» | The train ride to Niagara Pelle, where we arrived at 1:30, was very enjoyable. Time was spent by setting wnt studying=--mostly, however, it was spent by sleeping. The train stopped @n the Canadien aise of the Falls to let | ui view. the Fells from that sider We were “all awed by this beautiful sight. A few, minutes later, we Girives in Niegara Falls, ‘ew York. After eating a very delicious lunch, we all walked downto the Fellse Per most of us this was our first trip to the Falls, and is cae _ everything we thought it would bee Very beautiful and vory lergee The vest of te afternoon was soon tai and then time to eat again. After dinner some walked back te the Falls, and some elites at the station for our trains At 8:30 Pe Me, we left Niagare on our pullman, We were ait Seb) Gihaustes, and it wasn't long until all were sound asleepe a 3 December 26 We arrived at west Point about 9:30 in the mornings We were met by the officer in chaved'ak \veoveviet? and Re Logan, head trainers We were taken for a nice ride around West Point after: breakfaste We visited their athletic building, which is one of the aes. best in the world. One of the doctors checked us all for colds and signs of flues We all received a big thrill at lunch. We ate in the same building as plebes, and they gave us quite a cheer when we walked ine After lunch we practiced in their enormous field house and then left for New Yorks We errived in the big city about 6:30, and ferried across Hudsons He Engleman sang "I Love to Ride the Ferry" which brought - beos and jeers from the other team members were then ee to our hotel, Hotel Phoadilly, and to the nail which awatbed UB» After dinner we went to the Gardens Here most of us received our greatest thrill-we were to pley in Madison Square Garden, the idol spot of all dasketbe 11 i ad the place where all beys dream of someday playing. the ‘team, with the exception of Beb Allen. and - myself, a6 we still had our ‘toush of flu, dressed and took a guia’ workout between the hele of one of the gemese We then went back to the. hotel where everybody: oljayel the night's sleep. poe December a7. The morning of the aren was spent in loafing around the towns In the afternoon, due to ie paslemats bergeining, we all got reduced prices on a sight-seeing ‘arip. The trip ‘took us to many spots ef interest, ineluding the Eapire Stato Euilding, Chins Tawny view of Statue of Liberty, and many other placese That night many weet to | a show, but I was still not feeling $00 good, so stayed in and was off to bed very earlys Yanoe Hall December 28 This morning we were all to go visit Radie City. After we arrived there, our party was lost from Dr. Allen and the other crop, se we wont on 4 private little tour of our own. On the tour we listened in to a program which was on the eid, and saw many interesting things which enlightened us as to just how a progres is bent * ow radio in our own homes « That ‘ithevneen was. spent in stacvine and vubvhing up for the game. | | a8 | At night the game a played. ‘Nuff atts After the game we all forgot our woes, tried to awyway, and went te the Blue Room of Hotel Lincoln and listened to Tony Pasteur and orchestra. All the veys tried to dance more then their share with Eleanor Allene It was pretty late when we finally were able to get. to bed. | | December 29 Howard Engleman, Bill Hogben, Norman Sanneman, Brad Thompson, and I all went sight-seeing in the morning, traveling 211 around on the subways and ferries. | After lunch we packed and said goodbye to old New Yorks We arrived in Philadelphia, then went op tuarthneres Gl were met by Coach Bill Stetson, of Swarthmore College, and Bob Reid. . These gentlemen proved to be true friends and helped ue greatly et ell times. Before eating, we hed a short work-out in the Swarthmore Field Héuse. Vance Hall ifter finishing practice, we went to the Strath Haven Inn to eat a very fine dinner, although several boys, inoluding Dick Miller and Howard Engleman, thought they had forgotten to cook the meate Then retirede<<< December 80 This morning was spent in seeing Independence Hall, the Liberty . Bell, and other interesting historical markings. Norman Sanneman pioked up a stone near Independence Hall, end is keeping it for a ‘souvenirs | After eating we returned te the Inn where we rested for the games Go 4s we Thet night we met a rough Temple clan and/were finally downed SDetS OER After the game we Sid G26 Samotning, then returned to Swarthmore by our buse | December 31 We left Swarthmore about 10:00 o'clock and arrived in Washington De Ce at approximately 2:00. o'clock. We then taxied to the F. B. Ie building, and here we were conducted on a most interesting toure One of the things that I liked especially was the seeing of the fingers prints and pictures of some of our notorious bendits who have been killede | At 5:00 o'clock we all hed @ big meal, Howard Engleman topping it off with his specialty, a big dish of venille creame We were then free to do whet we wanted until train time. I attended @ show with John Buescher and Dick Millers Vanee Hall Our pullman left at 11:40 end we were all still awake when the New Year rolled in. After many shouts of Happy New Year, we finally dropped off to sleep. January 1 This day was spent mostly on the train. The main happening was the Senta Clare boys giving yells for Kansas, and. we returned to them yells for Santa Clare. It was an enjoyable rid@e We arrived in Chicago in time for dinner that night and the evening was spent in studying and writing letters. Before bed time, Dean visited all the YOOms y checking us for the game tomorrow - night. : January 2 This morning we spent most of our time in the rooms. After _ lunch Dr, Allen gave us 8 very good talk and then we went to our rooms for a short nape eS | | After our lunch at 6380 we loafed around till time to go to the Coliseum. Here we found a terrible dressing room--it was so small we could hardly turn eround. This time, however, we didn't mind, as we were vieverteus 41-40. 7 After the game we watohed Santa Clera defeat De Paul, then returned to Hotel Allertone We all ate a meal end then retired. Januery $ We were awakened at 8:00 o'clock this morning and had to rush through our breakfaste ve ate at a cafoterie which pleased all the beys as they could collect 11 the food they wanted. We made the train with a few minutes to spare and the last leg Vanee Hall of our journey had started. The day wes spent studying and sleeping by the most of use At lunch time H. ingleman and Bill Hogben gave two sophomores, Dick Miller and myslef, lessons on the complete etiquette. We finally arrived in Lawrence about 6:00 ofelock, our wonderful journey completed. As so many of-the boys have said, we didn’t win all our games, but every minute of the trip was enjoyable and educationale
