POTOMAC AND DE KALB STREETS SAINT LoOuTS. OO. W. A. ROBINSON, MANAGER MERCHANDISING DIVISION December 29, 1939 Dr. Forrest C. Allen University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen: I just received your letter of the 28th regarding Dudley DeGroot's request for Goal-Hi literature. I have checked back in the files and find that we wrote Mr. DeGroot a letter on the 20th and mailed a Goal-Hi catalog under separate cover on the same day. In the postscript on the letter which he wrote you he says that the letter just came in but no prices. The reason for this is that the catalog, including prices was sent to him under separate cover by third-class mail and would probably take two or three days longer to reach him. I will admit that it does seem as though the mail took a long time to reach him but it was probably due to the Christmas rush. I am today writing Mr. DeGroot a letter of apology and will attach another Goal-Hi catalog to my letter and send it first-class just in case the other one went astray. Although your letter was addressed to Roy, I took the liberty of answering it because Roy and Fred Medart are, at the present time, in Syracuse, New York at a convention, which is a combination Phys- ical Director and School Principal convention, and the only thing we are exhibiting is Goal-Hi. Roy is expected back in town Satur- day and we ali hope to hear a good report from him with regard to Goal—Hi in New York. Kindest personal regards. POTOMAC AND DEKALB STREETS SAINT Lovis. Mo. R. E. WEINZETTEL SALES PROMOTION MANAGER January hy 191,0 Dr. Forrest C. Allen University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Phogs Last month I had quite a session with Porter in Chicago for the purpose of finding out what opportunity we had of getting the convex basketball back- board of modified size and shape, approved as optional equipment at the next meeting in March. This was a lengthy session and was largely given over to the question of how we could get a patented item approved by the Committee and still avoid the appearance of establishing a monopoly. More about this angle later, but what I want to talk to you about now has to do with presenting this convex backboard idea before this Committee. Porter seemed to be of the opinion that you, as Chairman of the Research Committee, should have some data available covering investigations or re- search made by you and possibly others comprising your Committee, and we are wondering whether we can count on you to work up something prior to this sesSion so we can bring this matter to a vote. We have had some very encouraging information to date, namely, that Hickox is a booster of the new convex board, and also a vote taken by Good of Williamsport indicating that of 18 coaches who inspected or used the board at the Williamsport Y.M.C.A., 13 were in favor of it, 3 disapproved, and 2 were non-comittal. At the same session, which extended over several months, 237 players were interviewed and 178 approved the convex board, 0 disapproved, and 19 were non-committal. John Bunn also writes under date of December 28 advising that they have had quite a little time in which to judge the board we gave them and that he had received many satisfactory comments and no criticisms. Bunn seems to be concerned over the question of expense and states that it will be neces- sary for the Rules Committee to consider this item as well as the playing advantages if the new board is adopted. In other words, Phog, this desire of ours to have the convex board come up for a vote in March is not going to be so easy and we are trying to learn just how we can go about having this board approved. Certainly the coaches over the country who have had an opportunity to work with the board have many reasons to approve it, amd the records speak for themselves. Just received word from New York that two sound crews will 4 at the game, Priddays; and my boys will also be on the story. They are coming from Chicago and will cover the Corn Husking Contest also. This puts me on the spot as I have covered husking contests many times and know the actual contest is over in a short timeyyet often the judges and scorers take several hours to determin the winner. One crew must stay at the farm,my men and the other sound crew will come to the K.U.Stadium. This means it is neccessary for me to take care of two trucks with a total of four cameramen from Chicago and my car with two cameramen and two helpers, making eight in all and a note to your West gateman to allow our trucks to pass. Your Goal=-Hi story should be along now, just as the football season ends. Allen Univerdity of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Phogs Your letter of January 8 with reference to the coming meeting of the Na= tional Basketball Rules Committee in relation to the convex backboard, was received by all of us with more than ordinary interest. We are particularly pleased to note the closing sentence of your letter in which you advise that you will keep us advised as to the progress of the committee and the attitude they take. We are extremely anxious that this convex board come up for consideration as it will undoubtedly be a prominent part of the meeting, judging from what we have received elsewhere, and that it be approved as optional equipment. The last desire on our part is, of course, understandable without much difficulty. In any event, Phog, we are going to bear down on this subject as much as we can from our position as a manufacturer and shall thoroughly discuss this with you when we meet you during the N.E.A. Convention. At that time you will probably have some reports from your Committee, and we can, in turn, give you such data as we have compiled here and there over the past year. One other thing, Phog, that is worthy of mention at this time, and that is your statement in the second to last paragraph, to the effect that you would not mention our nam of the firm's name. I don't see how we are going to be able to avoid this question of identity inasmuch as Porter and yours truly have met o several occasions in connection with the dis- turbing problem of a possible patent being allowed us, in whichéase the thought of a monopoly being established, has come up for discussion. We attempted to sidestep this, and, I think, in a very fair way by agreeing to license reputable manufacturers to fabricate convex backboards, altho we would like the privilege of passing on such applicants in cmjunction with the Rules Committee. More about this later but it is an important fact, at least in Porter's mind, and also in min@ Cordially yours, FRED MEDART MANUFACTURING CO. Allen University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Phogs In reply to your letter of January 5, I am indeed glad to note that there is a possibility you could arrange to be with us in St. Louis during the N.E.A. Convention on the 2/th. The reason I have not replied to your letter of December 11 regarding the N.E.A. is because I understood from your letter that there was no possi- bility of your being with us due to your basketball schedule. If we can get together and make a definite date for the 27th, I certainly would be glad todo so because of several reasons. In the first place, there are a number of things we should be talking over in a general way and specifically; and secondly, we are going to have about 15 or 16 of our present sales representatives in for the N.E.A. Convention, and following an all-day sales meeting on Sunday, the e5th, we thought that possibly we could have a noon-day luncheon on the 27th while you are here and give them a good, big shot in the arm of the old Phog Allen pep so that when they go back out into their territory as District Managers for the sale of Goal-Hi, they will have some new thoughts and enthusiasm to spur them on to greater effort in our mutual behalf. How does that sound to you, Phog? The only thing I would like to settle as quickly as possible is that we make a definite appointment for all of the 27th so I can schedule our several days of the Convention accordingly. I am sure you appreciate the fact that every minute of our time during this Convention is in demand one way or the other, and if we could definitely agree on the 27th for a noon-day sales meeting, in the interest of Goal-Hi, with you as the guest of honor, I want to do so. Here's hoping you can make it, Phog, as I think this would be to the good of all concerned, and besides, it has been a long time since I lave lad the plea- sure of spending a few hours with you. Dear Dr- Allen; I read in the K. U. Graduate Magazine about "goal high," the fine new basketball game you invented. This seems to me to fill ae very real need and I would like verv much to learn where the basketball standard cen be pur- chased and, if I may be so bold, I would like to suggest that you make one addition- al modification on this standerd3: To wit: why not make it adjustable for height so that little fellows could use it as a playground or backyard game-- or even indoors in a relatively small room. From the picture I have in front of me I note that the standard is supported by four dia@gonal braces which make it rather easy to triv over in the rush of plav. How about setting the standard in a flat, heavy, metal disc? My guess is that this game will spread rapidly if given even slight encouragement. Sa BEN SOLOMON
