April 4, 1044. Mr, EB. Re Black, Black & Veatch, Ingineers, Kansas City, Missouri. — fear Mr. Black: I do want you to kmow how much I appreciate your taking the time to write me a letter from Fairbanks and to enclose the fine basketball progren of the first Alaska-Canadien Army invitational Basketball Tournament. It just shows us how basketball has spread to all corners of the glebe. Certainly Dr. Naismith made a wonderful contri- bution to youth when he originated this game back in 1881. I appreciate your sending this to mand I am passing your | program around to interested and Co persons. - ae With @11 good wishes, T an Sincerely yours, / Director of Physical Bdication, Varsity Basketball Coach. -“Nordale Hotel Fairbanks,Alaska March 10,1944 Dear Doctor Allen:- It was my good fortune to attend the first three days of play in the first Alaska-Canadian Army invitational Basketball Tournament, and we saw a breathtaking brand of basketball it would be very difficult to equal in the Big Six or Big Ten schedules, I know that you know a lot of these players, and the tournament program is attached for your in- formation and record. ‘he games were played in the Fairbanks gymnasium, which has a more modern and efficient basketball score board than the one in Convention Hall at Kansas City. This is my first experience in Alaska-I'm having a fine time-but expect to take off for the return trip to Kansas City about tuesday, and will likely have to come 'in' again in May. E. B. Black PS-the winners of the tournament-for Canada- were US Army Engineers- a good illustration of how North Ameriea is sticking together under our present World Wide misunderstandings,. EBB April 4, 1944. Miss Mildred Beecher, 301 Harrison, Newton, Kansas. Dear Miss Beecher: _ TI am sending you a rough sketch of the foot arch normal- diner. It may be thet you cannot get a gear and ratchet for the normalizer , so it might be altogether thinkable that you could put an iron peg in the end something like the lawn mower roller operates. 1 trust the sketch and description will enable you to make one since you saw it yourself when you were here. About the only kmee brace that I know is the slastic knee brace. I imagine you would be able to get those at a physicians' supply company. I am sure that if you could get some treatments for the knee you would be able to get much more relief than depending upon a brace, There is an interference with the nerve supply from the sacro-iliac sprain, and unless you remove that difficulty you will always have trouble. There- | fore, the treatments would be mors efficasious. Tf you should ever happen through Lawrence I would be glad to fix it for you. If I can help you further, please let me know. : . : Sincerely yours, — Pirestor of Physical Bducation, Varsity Basketball Coach. | 2135 New Hampshire Lawrence, Kansas March 18, 1944 De. I am not going to have much time to write this morning, but just want you to mow that we haven't forgotten you. : Sorry we missed you and Lucey when you were here. I under- stand how limited your time is when you are off on leave. Bobby is getting married sometime the latter part of April. So Mrs. Allen and the rest of the family are getting terribly busy. However, Bob hasn't definitely got his leave assured, so I imagine he still may be somewhat uneasy. He is marrying Jean McFarland in Topeka. I will try to answer the rest of your good letter through the next Rebounds which should be coming off the typewriter pretty soon. : With all good wishes and best of success to you and Lucy, I am 3 : Sincerely yours, Director of Physical Education, Varsity Basketball Coach. I had heard you were publishing the monthly letter, but it was the first copy that had come my way. I have scamed it for names and find it most interest- ing. I'll have to settle down ami go over it thoroughly. The morning paper here happened to carry a story on the Iowa State nd Utah victories last night in the tourmy at K.C. I'm pulling for Louie am the Cyes. I haven't seen anything about Dean Nesmith lately. If he's still around give him my regards. I wrote him a card once during football season but he was probably too busy to answer. I have a 6-month subscription to the Jourmil-World and so manage to keep abreast the local news. The STAR sends a weekly news summary and also a monthly office gossip sheet. Both are very interesting. Best regards. Yours, ae P.S.--- Hello, Mrs. Hulteen. Cpl. Robert J. The veteran Kansas basketball coach thinks it’s time for intercollegiate athletics to have a high commissioner, a Judge Landis, to keep the colleges in line. He said the col- leges were “breaking the rules like Hitler did the Versailles ad cold” quint ‘et to get all in-the same e ‘Branch kept Harding Field 2 points, but p consistently Field Fliers iitey Hoskins | Zremilion did 7 that= nicht. 3engals. have from eariy capable cag- ch, big Win- ile and Gre- treaty.” Now that’s pretty strong language, just about as strong as you can speak. Ahd he was only warming to his subject. He went on to state that the “pseudo patriotism of some of these so-called big time coaches in both bas- ketball and football is astounding. “These fellows are traveling over the country now, signing up all likely 4-F boys with athletic potentialities. They are indulging in frantic flag waving while posing as developers of young men, aiding the war effort through physicai conditioning programs of athletic games. “No one need be fooled by their tactics,’ Pog con- tinued. “They are playing for huge financial stakes. Bowl games and tournament money. is the lure.” Allen doesn’t aim fire at any one or two men although I have an idea that he’s blasting at some few men in par- ticular. One of them probably is Henry Frnka, Tulsa’s football coach. | Although the Southeastern conference had two of its four teams, Georgia Tech and LSU, in Bowl football games I don’t think Allen is sharpshooting at the SEC. Tech got its strength from Navy aid while LSU has Steve Van Buren, a deferred engineering student, and a flock of 17- year-olds. And besides there’ s no law nonine any SEC from of- fering athletic scholarship to 4-F’s and youngsters under the draft age. If these practices were okay in peace-time I think they are at least equally good in war-time. ° The politicians all speak of what they intended to do for our returning veterans. What’s wrong when the ath- letic department of some school looks up a young man dis- charged from the services and offers him aid in getting a college education? Nothing that I can see provided it does not violate a conference or school rule. Frnka over-did a good thing last year scouring the country for 4-F’s and coming up with a total of 24, some ef whom whose eligibility was questionable. Frankly I was disappointed when the Sugar Bowl people saw fit to invite a team of that sort to its January one attraction especially after they ran up such a one-sided score against Arkansas in their finale in the hopes of clinching a Bowl invite. If loquacious. Pog is shooting at the Tulsa coach he ean save his fire because Frnka is having his headaches without aid from the Kansas cage mentor. Some of’ his opponents didn’t like the idea of playing a team like he fielded last fall and they don’t intend to play his this season. leams ten fo Meef UP)—Har- ic _Philadel- ‘er of the it, adding y by pair- sader Bob ‘hole pro- ith a best the Los for low Harry | hey had t handi- nbination dicap as kes.
