C. Allen Who’s Phog Allen?-: Dr. F. C. “Phog” Allen, one of the biggest names in basketball, is coach and director of athletics at the Uni- versity of Kansas. He has probably turned out as many All-American basketball players as any coach in the United States. When he was an _ All-American player at K. U., he set all-time record for the most points ever made in one game in collegiate play; this record remained until last year when one of his own players, Engleman, broke it by a few points. i He is well known for his ability to treat athletic injuries, and many rival teams send their injured players to him to have him cure them so they ;can try to beat his own team. National fame has been his for his wide crusade against professional- ism in college athletics. KU. Squad Cage Clinic Two-Day Session To Be Climaxed By Home Game Dr. F. C. “Phog” Allen, athletic di- rector at the University of Kansas and his varsity basketball squad will be drawing cards for the Southwest Kansas Basketball Glinic sponsored by Dodge City high school December 11 and 12. Concluding the clinic will be a game at 8 p. m. Friday between Dodge and Emporia high schools with a special talk and demonstration by Dr. Allen and his players at the half of the game. Thirty teams from southwest Kan- sas have registered for this clinic, the largest ever held according to Mr. F. B. Toalson, principal of the high school, through whose effort Dr. Allen has been persuaded, for the first time in history, to take an athletic team from K. U. for anything except a game. Each team will play, pr really: practice, two halves, meeting a dif- ferent team for each half. During the time that the team is playing its coach will sit with Dr. Allen. “Phog” will discuss the type of play and the players and answer any of th: +-*9h. es questions. It is thought that tnm direct contact with the famous men- tor will be more valuable as a means of improving the teams than any method used in past years. The officials from this part of the state who wish to volunteer their ser- vices for these sessions will be con- tructively criticized by a board of critics. : 5 With far more teams than ever before entered, the practice sessions will begin Thursday afternoon and continue through the evening and Friday morning and afternoon. Your letter has helped very much. We have been work- ing for two weeks on Gerald Tucker, but this morning we received word that he had been declared ineligible. I em sending you a clipping him, and I am alse sending you a marked copy off the Big Six eligibility rules which show that he violated both the migrant rule and the resident rules enough to even think of using him this first senester. And the fact that he was a migrant and no correspondence was indulged in between Oklahoma and Kansas State put the migrant curse on him in such a way that it would be nothing short of generosity if they ever let hin compete at Oklahoma. It was a steal engineered by someone and I do not believe that the boy was as guilty as some of the staff at Oklahoma. Or, if it is not the coaching ataff, then it was some- ene that worked hand in glove with the coaching staff. Anyhow, we will not have to worry about Tucker this first game, so we will spend our time on Mr. Richard Reich. nl We have been working pretty good until last night. We had a terrible practice last night - the worst we have ever had. Maybe it is necessary to have those once in a while so that we can oriticize and find fault with same of the things that the boys have not been doing. We will look petty good in some games and then we due to lack of experience and P lack of ability of the players to see one lay ahead of themselves. Anyhow, ion: wes*t held you eo that $10.00 hat. Allen, Varisty Basket Ball Coach University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allens: Although I have been working night and day since the war broke out on December seventh, I took time off last evening to scout the Bradleye Oklahoma gameée Bradley won 47-42, You are undoubtely acquainted with the various formations used by the Soomers in past years. This year's team uses a single and double pivot with the third man passing by the pivot man receiving the ball for a shot. Gerald Tucker is a second Joe Reif on offense, and a Wells(KU) . on defenses. Richard Reich, also, plays the pivot, but his strength is limited. Note, Tucker is not dangerous when in the free throw zone with exception of clever passing to teammatese Oklahoma's weaknesses can be placed on poor reserves, now rebounding on offense, and inability to stop a fast break. Early in the segond’ half, Bradley turned on the heat, and scored fifteen points before the Norman team could get their bearingse The three men out in front talking gone defense was effeetive while they were ahead, but the Peoria's team stall, and @elayed offense broke it upe One can hardly understand how Oklahoma has been beaten so many times this year since the boys fight hards.,pass well, rebound perfectly on de- _ fense, make their free throws, and have some good pivot scoring playse If Kansas beats them on the night of January sixth, I will personally buy you any $10. 0O Stetson hat in Kansas City. I have seen Joe Rieff work several tough games for Bradley, and he is sound under all kinds of pressure even though the home team might be behind in the third over timeée Joe is now a successful lawyer on La Salle Street, and Dutch Lonborg recommends him whenever the opportunity presents itself. Rieff is one of the few Jews in the country to make Sigma Chi at Northwesterny However, Don Elser is a graduate of Notre Deme, and in all probability a Catholic, not by choice, but as usual by birthe I have never seen him in action which means that I am no judge or critic for his work. Four of the boys I am bringing are Seniors--three with some promise as basketball players. Two of them espically, I be- lieve, will be pretty good boys. Both of these two are better than six feet. Frank Pattee is a fine football player, and one of the best rebounding boys I have seen in high school, I would like for them to have an opportunity to meet you. The other is definitely going to Ke.
