They apparently didn't provide much opposition for vour boys the way you ran over them. Or was it thet boys didn't rush into the swimming pool but jumped on the Kansas collegians with both feet? Anyhow, give my congratulations to the boys. It was a pleasure to be with you. RE CRE eee Se I er) WO NN ee eR ee ~ R. E. BOWLES H. R. GODFRIAUX ATHLETIC DIRECTOR nee HEAD COACH DIRECTOR PHYSICAL EDUCATION FOOTBALL BASKETBALL September 18th, 1941 Dr. Fe. G Alion Kansas University Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen: It is with a great deal of pleasure that I learn you are to be the speaker at our “Kick Off" dinner. It is kind of you to come and I want to express my personal appreciation. Mr. Kenagy, with whom you communivated over the phone, pres- ident of our student body, asked me to write you relative the nature and purpose of the dinner so that you Gould better select the nature of your talk. As far as we are concerned and I think generally speaking this kind of an affair at this time of the season is an innovation. The purpose of the dinner, as you might surmise, is to produce a genuine college spirit on the campus. Personally I am hoping it will effect an inspirational influence, particularly on the football squad resulting in their willingness to give their best. Youpersonally have certainly accomplished that with your own teams. It has seemed to me here that there has'nt been a willingness on the part of the squad members to pay the price of winning, to make the necessary sacrifices for success. Anything that you can say to inspire them to do that will be deeply appreciated by me. The nature of the affair is just a very simple dinner. fhe cost has set very low with the hope that as many students will attend as can be handled. The girls and boys who board at the dormitories will be admitted free, other students will be charged only thirty cents and faculty and town's fol® fifty cents. The number will be limited to 300 which the student council feels will easily be there. AS you can see the whole affair is to get off on a good start in football. We play our first game the next daye aw Mr. Kenagy asked,to extend to you an invitation to bring with you any guests you might desire. If Mrs. Allen would enjoy coming please bring.her. Just let us know how many plateS you would like for us to reserve for your guests. Again thanking you very much for your kindness in coming, and with best wishes and kindest regards, I remain Very cordially yours NH Rhode October 6, 1941. Mr. John He Glenn, 710 East 4th St,,. BEARDSTOWN, ILLINOIS _ September 3, 1941 Dear Dr. Allen: This letter is to inform you that John Buescher is in first class physical condition after completing his third season as an employee of our organization. John, during the past three weeks, has been a helper on one of the ice trucks, and, consequently, should be as hard as nails for your fall practice session. Upon Suesch's arrival home, I discovered his carrying a pipe in his coat pocket. The pipe dropped in front of me on the plant platform early one morning. Upon questioning him, he informed me that he had used it several times since spring practice, but he told me that he intended to give it up be- fore fall practice starts. I immediately lectured to him on the use of tobacco, and since that time he has not used tobacco in any form. Looking back over the last three years of John's employment with us, we see a great difference in his actions. The plant engineer as well as myself appreciate the efforts that you have made in providing John with the advantage of a college education and athletic training. Undoubtedly you are in the midst of rehearsals and dinner parties for the coming event on September 6. Be sure to take a strong Dexin before entering the Church.
