But you being already merried need the money, and we want to do everything we can to straighten out the error. Please return the time slips so that Mrs. Hulteen can include this in the August payroll which is due at the Busineas Office by August 25th. Tt wes a pleasure to have you with us this summer, and I wish for you much success during the coming school yeare : Sincerely yours, Director of Physical Bducation and Recreation, Ence : Varsity ball Coache Jewell, Kansas Aug. 10, 1941 FE, GC, Allen Director of Physical Education Varsity Basketball Coach Kansas University Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen: I wish to thank you for the job during the: summer. The money which I have coming from thet source will help a lot. In regard to the amount that I have coming there seems to have been some error. [I re- ceived my check today for the period June 20, to July 20. The check I received, and which I am enclosing to you, was in the amount of $1.75. According to my figures I have almost S10 dollars due me for that period, or there- abouts. I kept no accurate account since each time I worked I filled out one of the slips there in your office. I presume that some mistake in the bookkeeping has been made, or, perhaps the other amount due me is to be added onto the check for the work done after I wonder if your secretary could check up on this matter, and if my time was overlooked might it not be added on to that amound due me from July 20 to the end of summer school. I am sending the check in order that you may see it and that perhaps it may serve in check- ing to determine the error. Thank you again for the job and the help. I appreciate very much your interest and coun- sel. I left the basketball which I had check- ed out to me with Dr. Elbel. Very Fg ie Je We. JOHN AND FINDLAY STREETS CODE: BENTLEY CINCINNATI, OHIO, U.S.A. 15th, 1940 We have been acquainting ourselves with the new type of Basketball Goal necessary to accommodate the revised backboard, and jin so doing have encountered several problems which will necessitate reviewing the Committee's Ruling on the new bank and goal. For instance, we are interested in learning if the Rules Committee has designated any particular thickness to be used in constructing the bank. This would affect the method of attaching the goal. In order to have the picture clearly before us we would like to have all available information on these rules. Your cooperation will be helpful and appreciated. Best regards. It would seem to us that this would be a highly desirable applica- tion for Airfoam for the following reasons. It is light in weight; it is highly porous, permitting the free passage of air, and would thus be cooler than impervious substances such as ordinary sponge rubber with its thick skin. It is washable. Can be disinfected. It certainly would absorb shock and can easily be cut or fabricated to almost any size or shape. But the proof of the pudding is in the eating, and we are sending to you under separate cover, a sheet of our 1/4" material of sufficient size so that you can do considerable experimenting with it. Incidentally, Airfoam in the so called "slab" stock without interior ¢avities or cells, as we term them, molded into the structure, is produced in thicknesses ranging from 1/4" up to 1". The price list attached will give you the variation in size, also, the prices. Your discount as an institutional user would be 20-50%. Our nearest sales representative of the Airfoam Division is Mr 0 J Kastner - Goodyear, Mechanical Goods Department, Kansas City, Mo. A copy of this letter will go to him, as he possibly gets into Lawrence from time to time, and might be of assistance to you. It is suggested that any orders which you care to send for Goodyear Airfoam, be mailed directly to our Kansas City district office, as this will insure the best attention due to the various details employed in handling our orders and distribution. Your inquiry is greatly appreciated and we hope that we can be of some service to you. hclial Yours very truly MW. BEARDSTOWN, ILLINOIS October 8, 1940 Dr. Forrest C. Allen, Varsity Basketball Coach University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen: Have purposely delayed answering your kind letter of some weeks ago in which you invited me to attend — either the Nebraska-Kansas or Oklahoma-Kansas games which are to be played on October 19 and November 9 respectively. Due to the National Ice Association Convention, that is to be held in New Orleans on the week of the 21st, I find it impossible to attend the Nebraska game and as for the Oklehoma tilt it appears that a wedding of a close friend of the family on that day will keep me from Lawrence. It is with regret that we find it impossible to enjoy @ session with you and Mrs. Allen and family during this football season. However, with several business deals in the offering, one of which might call me to Kansas City, we might be able to sur- prise you some week end in the near future. We have not forgotten the enjoyable visit we had with you in Beardstown when you were our guest last month, and we do appreciate the effort that you made in driv- ing several hundred miles out of your way in order to spend a few hours in our home. I am enclosing @ clipping on our friend Art Dufelmeier and needless to say he is enjoying reading your book of "Better Basketball.". Since I have not heard from our mutual friend, John Buescher, I am wondering at this time whether he will be eligible for the winter campaign. His parents have a change in heart for him since you and Mrs. Allen visited their home and I assure you that they are giving the bad 100% cooperation at this end of the line. GRIFFITH, EDITOR TELEPHONE ROGERS PARK 5074 THE ATHLETIC JOURNAL 6858 GLENWOOD AVENUE CHICAGO, ILL. July 21st, 1940, Dr. Forrest C. Allen Varsity Basketball Coach University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas. Dear Dr, Allen: I am somewhat tardy in my acknowledgment of your kind letter of June 6th, as I took a longer vacation this year than usual. It is very kind of you to be willing to co-operate with us. Since the trend today is for pictures, and by way of variation from our usual basketball articles, I thought we might run a series of articles in several issues, using the film as the basis. This should give the N.C.A.A. Basketball Tournament some good advance advertising and be helpful to coaches of basketball in their work, As you will see from the enclosed article by Joe Reiff, it takes five frames to a column, If one column can give the description of the play fully, one will be enough for each play, otherwise you may select ten frames, Then I like to have the captions of the play written up in de- tail. In fact, all the reading matter may deal with the captions with the possible exception of a beginning paragraph which may explain in general what is emphasized in the pictures to follow. The first article of the series might have an opening para~- graph about the series that is to follow in the next few issues. If you could originate some "catchy" name for each series, it would have a tendency to make the coaches think that there is something new in basketball. If some of the pictures,“ especially well illustrate some important fundamental, that could be touched upon in your discussion, The defense used by the opposing team, its good points, etc. may be included. I don't know as I have made myself clear, and it is rather presumptuous on my part to even make a suggestion to a student of basketball such as you. I could start this series in the September issue and run it through the February issue, six in all, if there is material available for that nmch, Do you have a firm in Lawrence or Kansas City that can make prints from films? If you do, you might have a few prints made, before com- pleting the series, to ascertain whether the prints are clear enough for cuts of distinct outline. If no such firm is available, you may send the film to JOHN L. GRIFFITH, EDITOR TELEPHONE ROGERS PARK 5074 THE ATHLETIC JOURNAL 6858 GLENWOOD AVENUE CHICAGO, ILL. July 2lst, 1940, Dr. Forrest C. Allen (2) me, with a thread tied in each frame that is to be used. If you have the negative film, that saves us the expense of first having negatives made and then the prints. At your earliest convenience, I would like to hear your reaction to this. I would also like to have you advise me as to the cost of your work. If we do not get into the war, so that our advertising con- tracts are cancelled, we shall be able to pay you for your services, Yours very truly, . Alice K. Griffith® \<, AKG—=MC
