1248 2nd Street Phillipsburg, Kansas April 13, 1941 Dr. Forrest ยข. Allen Director of Physical Education Kansas University Lawrence, Kansas Dear Doctor Allen: I have been notified by the Board of Education that my contract is to be renewed for next year. However, I am still anxious to get into coaching and I have placed my application with the Smith Center high school for the vacancy left when their basketball coach was called to the army. If you feel that you could conscientiously recommend me to the school, I would be grateful to you. I have told the board at Smith Center that I would attend summer school with the purpose in mind of enrolling in your advanced basketball course. I feel that that training coupled with my present knowledge would qualify me for the job. My chances seem to be very good and your word in my behalf would carry a great deal of weight. I realize that this request is unusual in lieu of the fact that I did not play varsity basketball under you. On the other hand I have confidence in my ability and this is an opportunity I may not get again soon. If you find it convenient, a letter in the immediate future to Ernest Allbert, Superintendent, Smith Center, Kansas, would reach him before a final decision is made. Should you feel that you cannot in all sincerity write Mr. Allbert in my favor I will accept your judgment without malice. J: 2 J We 'Bill' Greene JWG:RLG
