A ek University of Kansas Lewrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen: When you were here and spoke et our annual Buffalo Barbecue I wes so extremely delighted with the message that you gave that I have been wanting to express my appreciétion to you. I am a little late in doing it but I am sure that you will still accept it. I feel like praying God's richest blessings upon a man of your training and in your position as director of physical education and athletics that stands for high principles of character which you enunciated here at our annual meeting. I am sure you are doing the world a tremendous lot of good end I am also sure that you can do these things better than college administrators and even preachers. A word of that kind from you will sink deep and bare much good fruit. With my kindest regards to you, I am Sincerely yours, fZS: PSG:ms P. S. Goertz, Dea April 30, 1940. Mee Lester Gillman, Coach Humansville High School, — I am very sorry that I have been out of tom so much, coupled with our basketball play-offs, that it has been impossible for me to answer your letter sooner.s. I note that you have been under Coach Andy McDonald, one of my varsity players here at Kansas during 1921-22-23, Director of Physical Education and Recreation, FCAsAH Varsity Basketball Coache HUMANSVILLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS HUMANSVILLE, MISSOURI LOUIS E. RILEY, SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS F. M. SHEFFER, SECRETARY BOARD OF EDUCATION Mareh <5, 1940 Mr. Forrest ©.-Allen Kansas University Coach Lawerence, Kansas Dear Mr. Ailen: I need some advise on coaching and I would like to get it from you. 1 want to Know whether 1 should train a High School team on set plays or on unorthodox offense. i have had courses under A. J. McDonald Springfield Teachers College and "Little Bill" Miller of Tulsa. McDonald teaches us to coach set plays with lots of variations and Miller says the offense should be unorthodox. ft also have read your “"Basket-Ball Bible" and Nat Holman's "Winning Basket-Ball." : I have coached 10 years and tried severai plans. I have had some good teams and some poor ones. From 1935 to 1938 I had exceptionally good teams, for a small town. In "35 I used a simgle pivot imithe lahe. In '36 and '37 I used the double pivot and in '38 I used 3 men in (Similar to McDonalds teachers), Of coursé all those boys were well drilled on fundamentals. The last two seasons I have been located here and have had awfully poor teams. JI have tried several set systems and also no system. All have failed. Of course there/were no good players and very few of any kind here when I came. I am now conducting a spring practise and have twenty boys all of whom will be eligible next year. All are fairly well drilled in -fundamentals and all have had a little playing experience. So of course the teams next year will be better but I want good teams. whould I rely on experience, fundamentals, and a few general instructions for my offense or should I teach set plays? If set plays then what do you think of the ones I have used? The best teams in this section use no set plays on offense. In fact, about all they do is to put their best five boys on the floor and let them fight it out. they usually win and the fans like it so I am beginning to wonder if it is the best. ‘Some of our opponents use a shifting zone, HUMANSVILLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS HUMANSVILLE, MISSOURI LOUIS E. RILEY, SUPERINTENDENT or SCHOOLS F. M. SHEFFER, SECRETARY BOARD OF EDUCATION Mr. Forrest C. Allen Page 2. some a man to man that backs up first and some a man to man all over the court. If you have a book or booklet on offense and defense I would like to buy it. I have plenty of books on fundamentals, strategy, training, etc. Hoping that you may have the time and patience to answer this and thanking you very kindly, I am Respectfully yours, High School Coach 2 ny 6, 19405 Harlingen, Texas April Slst. 1940 Dr. Forrest C,. Allen Director of Physical Education University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Doe: Just thought I would drop you a line to find out if you could recommend a man to fill my position here in Harlingen. The Superintendent of Schools, Mr. E. C. Deering, esked me yesterday to write you and find out if you could supply him with another Kansas Jayhawker. He would like to have a man that had 18 hours in Methematics, or a minor, as he would teach mostly Com. Arithmetic and Algebra as I have done. His job would be to assist in football, head coach in basket ball, head track coach with special emphasis on basket ball. He would teach five classes a day with one off period. : They have a new field house just completed last sunmer that has a 86' X 50* playing court, six baskets and seats arcund 2000. He would have a pretty fair team returning next year with five lettermen back. We won the conference championship again this last year. I have fesigned my position here after four years so that I can go to school again and get a masters degree. Doc. I am wondering if I might use your name as a reference in case I need it? It was certainly kind of your team to include me in the group to receive the gold Elgin wristwatch as well as your presenting me with a gold championship belt buckel after the western play-off game with Southern Californ- ia. No doubt, you and Mrs. Allen have talked the scholastic standing of John Buescher over and have found some meth- od of getting him past his low marks already establish- ed this semester. I have written John, along with sev- eral of my friends in Beardstown and I only hope that these letters have some effect on him. If he can only pass this semester, he should pay big dividends for you during the next three years. Allen, Director of Physical Education University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Doc: Mighty glad to hear from you Doc. Yes I am planning on taking advanced work toward my master's degree. I haven't decided just where I am going to school as yet, just sort of looking around, I am sort of looking around to see if I cant get a fellowship or work enough to see me through. Do you think I could get something like that at K.U.? About what could T expect to get from helping with basket ball. Doe I sure would like to hear more about this as I believe I would prefer taking my work at Kansas more so than at any other school. We have a young fellow here who has been coaching Junior High athletics for the past four years. He is interested in taking work in physical education and eventually getting his M.A. in same. He is a very capable young man and I was wondering if by any chance you would have a place for him in the intra- mural department or in some other phase of your work. He was an all conference full back in the Texas Conference, has played professional base ball and in general is pretty well qualified. He is especially good at officiating in football, basket ball and bas ball. If you think you could by any chance have such a place would appreciate your letting me know right away.
