Form 6 50M:9-34:804 COMMITTEE ON RECOMMENDATION OF TEACHERS The State University of Iowa Iowa City, Iowa Estimate of Laurence V. Griswold as Mr. Girswold is the type of teacher who is primarily an excel- lent activities man, In the list of the qualities listed at the top of this sheet, I should say that in scholarship he was around the average for undergraduate students. He would rate very high in all of the other qualities, I would not expeet him to do very good work as a coach in varsity sports with the exception of mae pt oy His experience in those has been entirely theoretical. In indoor program for boys he would probably do.as good a piece of work as one would find done. He is intensely enthusiastic, likeble, interested in Hs pupils, and a superb performer. He is also extremely cooperative. I should recommend him withoutreserve for the activities type of position, I should like to reserve j ent as to his administrative ability until I have seen him do more of that kind of thing. In the organization and administration of departmental activities, such as our annual circus, he does very well. (signed) C. H. November 2lst, 1939. Mr. Forrest C. Allen Varsity Basketball Coach University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas, Dear Mr. Allen: I am replying to your special delivery letter of November 20th as evidently you do not know of Mr. Griffith's illness. He was stricken with a coronary occlusion five weeks ago Monday. We brought him home from the hospital ten days ago but it will be some time before he is able to sit up. He has responded nicely to oxygen treatment and rest and if we can keep him resigned to a period of complete rest, he will fully recover. We are starting to let him have visitors, so we can arrange to have you see him if you can spare the time to come out as far as we live. He goes to sleep about 9:30 at night so we find that around eight o'clock is a good time for him to have visitors. If your train gets in early enough Sunday night so that you could take a North Shore Electric train to Winnetka, we could meet the train and take you over to see him, I fear that since you leave on Monday at 9:30 for Cleveland, it will be impossible for you to see him that morning, If you don't have time to come out to see him, if you arrive in the city before 9:30, perhaps you can phone our house, Winnetka 3281, and although we have purposely arranged him at too great a distance from the phone to make it accessible, I can relay your questions and his answers. Your letter to him of November 18th just reached us today and we are taking that home to him tonight, Our residence is 717 Walden Road, Winnetka, should you need to reach us at that address. I would appreciate it if you would drop me a line, advising me whether or not it will be possible for you to come out Sunday night so that I may keep other visitors away. I am following the doctor's orders, no more than two visitors a day. Yours very went; (ef eC ii Alice K,.
