F. ¢. Alien, pnirector of physical Rducation, tmiversity of Kansas, pear pr. Allen: we, the undersigned, are interested in bar-bell gymnastics, pop= ularly known as weight lifting. For the last two or three years, & group of us have been working here regularly on this form of exercise, pro- viding our own equipment. our work aroused much interest among other students here in the physical RFducation department, and as the equip- ment which we have used before is no longer available, we do hereby petition for your approval of the department's purchase of necessary equipment. mhis equipment is available in an increasing number of modern gymnasiums, and as it is adjustible to such a widespread and beneficial usage by such a larze group of students, we think that the physical Fducation department would be greatly improved by making it available. The sets are obtainable in different weichts and styles, ranging in weight from 200 to 450 pounds, and in price from $18. to $45. we Suggest that as some of the larger sets make themselves available for use by several students at the same time, that these be considered as most appropriate for use here. wrging your consideration of our petition and thanking you we are, een Et bell Oh tety Yo Bergetaatiey a Wexry Mectehey October 18, 1958. fis q ia if : iH ji i “T4 fi, ita! ABSTRACTERS OF TITLE TITLES PASSED UPON BELL PHONE NO.37-J LOANS - REAL ESTATE MARION, KANSAS November lst 1958, Prof. Forrest C.Allen, Lawrence, Kansas, Dear Prof,.Allen: It certainly was very considerate of you to write me such an interesting letter, and conveying to me some things I wes tehage I was desirous of knowing. I attended the game at Manhattan Saturday, and was surrounded by K.U.boys, the two Mullen boys from home were with me and how they did pull for K.U. and I have seen K.U.play many times, but never saw them play a better or cleaner game than they did Saturday, every man was in there to win as they did. Yes, I know Gwinn Henry is now the director or Atheletics, I have known him for several years, while he was at Emporia College, then he was at M.U. for I think two years, and have always considered him a very capable coach, I want to again tell you that I am friendly toward K.U., it was wile I was Director of the State Highway Department,we did our part in having the road from Lawrence to Ottawa paved to provide a way that any one who wanted to attend the games rain or shine could get there. My old friend X.Kennedy of Lawrence was very interested in having this done, and I made many trips to Lawrence before the same was assured, Also No 10 was surveyed and the route designated while I was on the Commission and paved later. I was with the department from Jany 1925 to June 1950. I have written you before about other matters, is the particular reason I wrote you this time, I did not want to write to Gwinn Henry, as he might think I was just another crank, however I believe you are interested in knowing what the gross roots are saying, at least _ is what we who are interested in politics, always want to know. Ken Wlech of Empria a good friend of mine, I see him quite often, but I did not know he was a foot ball player, I know his cousin Fran Welch, is making good with Emporia Teachers, May I say a word of commendation for you, I think you are the best basket ball coach in this part of the country. And I certainly thank you for you kindly letter and hope that I may have at opportunity of you meeting you in the near future, and I appreciate you invitation to attend a game, For many years I have always attended the Kansas State Nebraska games, as Gov.Cochran and I are very good friends, and we have a lot of fun placing a small wager on the game, and I E.S.HANNAFORD BUSINESS JOHN W.GARDNER ESTABLISHED IN 187] HANNAFORD & GARDNER ONLY COMPLETE ABSTRACT RECORDS ABSTRACTS EXAMINED OF MARION COUNTY,KANSAS. ABSTRACTERS OF TITLE TITLES PASSED UPON BELL PHONE NO.37-U LOANS ~ REAL ESTATE MARION, KANSAS 2 = think I have a chance to take him this year, unless he looses the election, and I understand he has a real fight this year, Several years ago we were attending a game at Manhattan, players were being changed and substitutions made, Kansas State were 660, and a back field man was put in by Nebraska Mr.Cochran says to me,I will bet you a dollar he makes a touch-down on the first play, I took him with an extra dollar, I sure enough, he caught the punt and made a fine run with the best interference that any man could have and the schore was tied, That is confience and team work. We have a fine High School team have played five games, and no one has crossed our gole line, while our team has an average of 51 points per game. I dont miss any of them. As one who like all athletics, and never fail to attend all games I can get to see, I feel what K.U.needs,is too be taught that Coaches and Directors do not win the games it takes players, first who like to play, second physical fitness, and then good sprotmaship, Hot heads may be all right for one or two plays but never make 4 winning team, and do get the paying public against them and their team-mates, Yes, I have talked with Dutch Hauser a great deal about K,.U. but he can only see the K.U.view point, he is a fine lad and was a good player. X,Bible is not doing so well in Texas, he is the same kind of a director he was at Nebraska but he must not have the material, he had at Nebraska, Biff Jones, is loosing at Nebraska because he does not have the players, that Bible had. After seeing the game at Manhattan Saturday, I feel K.U.Has the material to win most of their games this year, if they will play foot ball, during the foot ball season, and fight during the boxing season, Again thanking you for your very kind and instructive letter, I am, “Movenber 26, 2988. It would be a great help if you would be so kind as to write to me without delay at the address given above. Yours very truly, STATE OF SECRETARY. Rhodes Scholarships Hutchinson, Kansas From the Secretary of the : Committee of Selection for 601 Wolcott Bldg. Kansas Noveanber 5, 1958 Referring to the application of .. Plaine E. Grimes Dear Sir: The man whose name is given above is a candidate for a Rhodes Scholarship before our Com- mittee of Selection this year. I should be grateful if you would send me a frank and confidential statement regarding his qualifications. Your prompt compliance with this request will be of great assistance to the applicant and will be deeply appreciated by the Committee of Selection. The basis of selection by the Committee is that section of the Will of Mr. Rhodes in which he mentioned the four groups of qualities which he desired in his scholars, the first two of which he considered the most important: (1) Literary and scholastic ability and attainments; (2) Qualities of manhood, truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship; (3) Exhibition during school days of moral force of character and of instincts to lead and to take an interest in his schoolmates; (4) Fondness for and success in manly outdoor sports such as cricket, football and the like. The selection is not made, however, on any system of averaging up a man’s qualifications under all these heads. Committees are interested instead in men who show promise of outstanding achieve- ment in later life in their particular callings. For this, distinction of intellect and character are the most important requirements and the Committee will be particularly interested in your critical estimate of the candidate on these points. You will naturally want to confine your remarks to those points on which you can write from personal contact, as it is not expected that each individual should be able to speak about the candidate's qualifications under all these heads. It would be useful to the Committee if you could mention the names of additional persons who know the candidate well and are qualified to give an opinion of him on the basis of first-hand information. Please do not hesitate to speak of the candidate's limitations as well as his strong points. Committees tend naturally to be dubious of recommendations which imply that a given individual has no limitations whatever. As preliminary consideration of the candidate will take place early in December, your letter will be of most value if received by that time, and I should be grateful if you will reply at your earliest convenience. Your letter will be treated as strictly confidential and will be read only by those whose duty it is to pass upon the qualifications of the candidate. Yours very truly, Br. Fy Gs Tox? Allen... Wm, D.
