September 20, 1937 Mr. Forrest ©. Allen, Lawrence, Kansas. My dear Phog: Now that we have qur athletes finally settled in school I-hope ?? and rgg@pming matters are over, it occurs to me that I did not receive from the University this year the customary postal outlining the 1937 football games and price of season tickets. Will you please take this matter up with proper authority in my behalf and have thenjlay aside two season tickets for me, one as is cus- tomary on my K, the other to be paid for and I will call for these the next time I am in Lawrence probably this week end. If possible have my reservations made in section K or L about midway up. In other words so I do not have to walk too far after entering the stadium from the ramp. If the athletic association should prefer immed- iate settlement, then tell them to advise me reservations made and the amount of check desired. I hope prospects ere favorable for a fair team this year and a much better one a year later. If you will take care of this for me, Phog, I certainly will appreciate it and am writing you instead of Henry as I have reason to believe I know you better than I Sincerely yours, MUG WMG: ANG AND THE RAYTOWN NEWS Kit A._E.GARVIN. Director of Physical Education University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Sir:- Inspired by Holcombe Ward, president of the United States Lawn Tennis Association and, as Harvard student, player in the original Davis Cup team of 1900, cohlegians are receiving considerable attention. Early American teams were all collegians. Intercollegiate tennis is attracting greater notice. As protessional coach at University of Kansas, you may mistakenly have imagined that this associa- tion, organized in 1927, as the Professional Lawn Tennis “ssociation ot the United States, is a match or tournament promoting organization. Nothing is further from its object. It is a mutual assemblage of professional coaches banded together to establish higher ethics of teaching and all that pertains to tennis. Character, all that that word means in its best sense, is a requirement of membership. The object of this association is to provide em- ployment, better facilities and prices in purchasing racquets, balls and other equipment, together with furnishing members a source or reliable intormation in answer to Federal excise tax and other problems. It is for mutual advantage in every respect. Several college professionals are memberse Yj ,u may desire to join, to avail yourself of its services. Any inquiry you may make will promptly receive atten- tion. Believing the Proressional Association can be helpful to you, I remain, Most cordially yours, — HAG: NJB Hen A. Dale Skelton, former Chanute high school athletic coach, is rated | as a possible successor to Blue Howell as coach at Pittsburg | Teachers college. Kenneth Simons | says in his sports column in the Pittsburg Sun today: “One local fan puts in a plug for | Dale Skelton, former star under | Dr. Garfield Weede for a. position | on the College coaching staff, now | that Blue Howell has resigned to | go to L. S. U. He says he voices the sentiments of many local fans and well wishers of College foot- | ball in boosting Skelton for the place, adding that Charley Mor- gan, assistant to Coach Howell for several years is the best bet for the head coaching position. “Whereupon we delved in our files and came up with Dale Skel- ton’s coaching record which we had a year ago. We added his re- cord for the 1937 season at Kem- per Military Academy and found that it looks like this: “Years in coaching . game— twelve. “Games played—111. “Games won—83. “Games lost—21. “Games tied—seven. “It looks better for the last Seven seasons: "Won 58, lost five, tied two. “Kemper is’a junior college, and with: only four junior colleges in the state of Missouri, the schedule is filled out with 4-year colleges, | In two years of such competition Coach Skelton has lost only one out of seventeen starts. At Chanute high school his teams were undefeated during the | career of Ralph Miller, sensational backfield star. Without Miller | has elevens were always among | the best and opposing coaches de- clared without reservation that his! teams were better grounded in| fundamentals than any in_ this! section. ei “The address is Boonville, Mo.” ii tc ae Gia seek, 8. 8 1 to have three children attending K.
