DEVITT FORMER CHAIRMAN WOMEN'S NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP COMMITTEE OF THE UNITED STATES 150 NASSAU STREET, NEW YORK CITY PHONE BEEKMAN 3-1038 September 10, 1937. Director of Physical Education University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Sir:- Inspired by Holcombe Ward, president of the United States Lawn Tennis Association and, as Harvard student, player in the original Davis Cup team of 1900, cohlegians are receiving considerable attention. Early American teams were all collegians. Intercollegiate tennis is attracting greater notice. As protessional coach at University of Kansas, you may mistakenly have imagined that this associa- tion, organized in 1927, as the Professional Lawn Tennis “ssociation ot the United States, is a match or tournament promoting organization. Nothing is further from its object. It is a mutual assemblage of professional coaches banded together to establish higher ethics of teaching and all that pertains to tennis. Character, all that that word means in its best sense, is a requirement of membership. The object of this association is to provide em- ployment, better facilities and prices in purchasing racquets, balls and other equipment, together with furnishing members a source or reliable intormation in answer to Federal excise tax and other problems. It is for mutual advantage in every respect. Several college professionals are memberse Yj ,u may desire to join, to avail yourself of its services. Any inquiry you may make will promptly receive atten- tion. Believing the Proressional Association can be helpful to you, I remain, Most cordially yours, — HAG: NJB Hen A.
