We put the stop watch on our , Had we know previously that you were to appear we would have cut the time to thirteen minutes for our parte Previously, they have had the trumpeteers and other entertainment that was not as exacting as your violin movements. Yours, of course, could not be cut any _ shorter than from three to two, end so forth, but we knew nothing of this, and apparently the time consumed in the opening of the station, the station announcements, and the introduction of the principals took time that should mre Ween plaamed furs Frankly, I was sick about the whole thing lest night, and I want to apologize to you for any discretion on our part. i assure you it was not intention- ale I have often saic thet I would rather hear you pley your viclin than any man I have ever hearte . That is not cheap flattery. You have always been so fine and wholesome about explaining the background and of the movement and composer, and so forth, that it is a real pleasure to see and hear you play the violins You take the ordinary fellow who does not have the musical background that most artists have, and you bring him up to ~ @ level that he can understand. y 5 Assuring you cf our appreciation for Tr ee sportsmanship, 1 sa sic cusahinty yours, FCA:AH _ Director of Physical Education. DEPARTMENT OF Music THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS SCHOOL OF FINE ARTS LAWRENCE November 15,1937 Doctor rorest G.allen, Director of Physical Education, University of Kansas. Dear Doctor Allen; I harbor no adverse feeling towarg you in the matter of the radio incident of the other evening.I do not hold you respon- sible in any way for this ‘infringement’ of time. Naturally, andbecause of the nature of the seleetion that I had echosen,I had hoped to finish it.It was the type of piece, which in order to be justified, needed the climax. The interest is pro- gressive in this piece as in many, and naturally all this was lost. The loss of a minute or two from a talk or musical selection robs it of its efiectiveness with the result that the purpose is dissipated. But let me assure you again that I felt no trespassing on your part.I do feel that it should be the policy of the station to avoid these overlappings. You,nor I,are responsible for this lack of co-ordination in time, but I do think that the station should avoid these conflicts. I appreciate your expression of interest in. my playing and want to thank you for this. I hope that we may have the pleasure of sharing another half hour at K.F.K.U. I really did want to see Elwyn before I left, but could never get in touch with him. I was up to the office and down to the Stadium two or three times, but never did get to see him. Funny thing though, Doe, I wouldn't have mentioned that loan if I had seen him. At the time I borrowed the money I told him I would borrow it only on the condition that I would pay it back only after I got a job, which would be in. two or three years. Elwyn helped me in so many more ways that I appreciated a hundred percent more than I did the loan that I had forgotten about it other than it kind of hung over my head and I knew it would have to be paid at the soonest possible date. I and Elwyn haven't had much in common since he has been married. He has been associating with a much older crowd of people and I didn’t think much about it when I didn't get to see him. I had planned to write him a letter sometime during the summer though. I am very glad that you heve taken enough interest to let me know conditions and please in the future if you feel I need to be checked up, don't hesitate to let me know. I realize that a young fellow will make a lot of mistakes and a helping hand from you will help more than you will ever realize. If there is anything I can do for you in the future, I will do my best to comply with your wishes. Very truly yours, Muah tae Wade Green Held a hill ote ad a i ee an i ; eal: i Ht Rig i! Alien SOl Louisiana Lawrence, Kansas Hello Doe: I hope you don't mind my esking another favor of you. From my correspondence with the Phillips Oil Company it seems that about the earliest that they will be taking any new men on at all will be next year. They say that it is very doubt- ful if they take anybody from this graduating class at all. I see by the papers that Elwyn has accepted a new posi- tion with Oklahoma A. & M., and this leaves the training job open at K.U. In your choosing of a new trainer, 1 wish you would consider me for the job. Pan This Nevada country surely is fine. It snowed last Sunday. You can't tell what it will do out here!
