Mr. Warren Israel, 6616 Virginia, Kansas City, Mos Dear Warren: T am glad to have your letter of August 20th. It came to my desk just after my return from the Iowa High School Coaches Associaticn coaching school where Clark Shaughnessy of Stanford, Bernie Bierman of Minnesota, Henry Tha and I were on the teaching faculty. I am glad for you to tell me about the two giants thet Missourl has -~ Burns and Shelley. Missouri should be in there with her giants. But Jack Ballard will mate; them so we will not be faced with the seme difficulty we were last year, that of pggmies battling giants. i We will be looking for you upon your return. We will stert early practice as per my basketball letter and we will be gled to see you out tolling with our gang. With all good wishes, I am Sincerely yours, Director of Physical Education and Recreation, Versity Basketball and Baseball Coach. August 20, 1941 Dear Dr. Allen: I was very pleased in receiving your basketball squedule for the ensuing season and your letter of inspiration. I have already, however, been in the properxstate of mind for the tasks that awaits USe After being on the side-lines watehing your team in action and anxious to be in action myself, I am now full of determination not to be on the side-lines again. I am glad that you have issued your challenge of hard work for I wish to accept ite The inspiration that I receive at home is already taking effect as practice is already being urged upon ME e I was deeply interested in the Lowa High School Kthletic Association Coaching Clinic and in the great names which took part in that affair in which I put that of Dre Allen at the top of the Liste In speaking of the caliber of some of the other teams, the two giants at Missouri should give a lot of trouble, Burns and Shelley, Shelley is 6* 8" and not at all awkward for a boy of his height. He played with us on the second team at Paseo, but he moved to Washington just when he would have been a valuable asset to us for the next two yearSe I am looking forward with great anticipation +o the coming Seasone Very sincerely yours, Mearsorde fey sacl IOWA HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION'S COACHING SCHOOL AND OFFICIALS’ CLINIC Des Moines “Y’ Camp Boone, lowa August 18, 19, 20, 21, 1941 Clark D. Green and he tells me that he is making up an order for the Lewrence High School Athletic Association at the present time for 100 baskets, The Lawrence High School baskets, I undere stand, are mde to the order of 10 x 12 x 24, We measured the University | baskets and they are 10 x 123 x 243¢ The beskets are made by some firm in Kansas City, Missouri but I could not learn from Green Brothers the name of that firm. I have suggested to Ure Green that he write you @ special ae letter today so that you could get the information in the morninge We paid sixty nite apiece for these baskets in 1935, and I understand thet is the same price they are quoting this years They come in serial numbers, with aluminum nuaber plates, They are very — rigid and a well-built basket, and I believe they will fit your needs. ° Please give my regards to Coach and Mrs. as ata We are very fond of thems. Ablen, Head, Department of Physical Education, University of Kansas., 105 Robinson Gymnasiun, Campus. Dear Dr. Allen: Following our conversation yesterday forenoon, I decided to announce in our publicity circular for high school seniors in the western part of the state that the final entertainment feature on April 18 would be a dance at the Memorial Union Building. I believe that, as you suggested, there is at least a possibility that we may be able to arrange for the use of the ballroom from 7:30 to 9:00. It is reserved that evening for one of the large organization parties and will, of course, be decorated for that party. But I shall do my best to get that organization to consent to our using it for these high school seniors for the hour and a half until 9:00 o'clock. If we fail on that, I shail need to ask your assistance ‘in an effort to persuade Chancellor Malott to permit the use of the basket_ball floor in the auditorium -- and I feel that our chances on this are rather meager, even though we can supply the necessary funds for refinishing the floor. The Community Building down town is available, but it represents an added problem in transportation in getting the students from the campus to the Community Building at 7:30 and then in getting them from there to the Santa Fe station to board their special train. Also a dance arranged at some place off the campus presents an added problem of supervision for the chaperons and class sponsors. In any case we will not plan on using the gymnasium for that purpose and I have not even suggested this in our publicity. However, we will wish to take advantage of your consent to make use of the first floor of the gymnasium for the dinner at 6:00 (to be served by Miss Zipple and her staff) in case of cold, rainy or threatening weather. Dr. F. G. Allen, Head, Department of Physical Education, 105 Robinson Gymnasiun, Campus. Dear Dr. Allen: As the date approaches, I want to remind you that we have an option on the first floor of Robinson Gymnasium for the afternoon and early evening of Friday, April 18, at the time of the Interséholastic Track and Field Meet. You probably have this in mind but I am anxious to make sure that there is no misunder- standing or oversight, so that this space will be available for serving the picnic dinner to our high school visitors in case cold or rainy weather forces us inside. I have not discussed the details of these plans with Miss Zipple recently but it may be that she will feel that we should install steam tables there in the southeast corner room in advance, just in case the weather might change at the last minute and prove unfavorable for an outdoor picnic. I will check on this the latter part of next week and will get in touch with you if it appears that we should have everything pretty well set to use the Gymnasium without waiting until the last minute to find out about the weather at that time. Nevertheless, I am looking forward to the competition in our coming series. Our Friday game will begin at 4 otclock and the Saturday game at 2 o'clock. This will give you a little more time after the Saturday session to get headed on your way back home, You will hit at the diamond for the background any time that you care to come out and up to 3:25. At that time I would like for you to take your infield practice and we will follow with ours, then allowing our grounds keeper six or seven minutes to brush the diamond and get it ready for the ball game. I have secured the services of Pete Knudson, high school coach near here who has umpired and played in the Western League; and the other man will be Curt Daib, a minister near here, a regular fellow and the perennial umpire of the State High School Tournament.
