THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS UNIVERSITY EXTENSION DIVISION LAWRENCE OFFICE OF THE DIRECTOR November 14, 1940. Dr. F. C. Ablen, Head, Department of Physical Education, University of Kansas., 105 Robinson Gymnasiun, Campus. Dear Dr. Allen: Following our conversation yesterday forenoon, I decided to announce in our publicity circular for high school seniors in the western part of the state that the final entertainment feature on April 18 would be a dance at the Memorial Union Building. I believe that, as you suggested, there is at least a possibility that we may be able to arrange for the use of the ballroom from 7:30 to 9:00. It is reserved that evening for one of the large organization parties and will, of course, be decorated for that party. But I shall do my best to get that organization to consent to our using it for these high school seniors for the hour and a half until 9:00 o'clock. If we fail on that, I shail need to ask your assistance ‘in an effort to persuade Chancellor Malott to permit the use of the basket_ball floor in the auditorium -- and I feel that our chances on this are rather meager, even though we can supply the necessary funds for refinishing the floor. The Community Building down town is available, but it represents an added problem in transportation in getting the students from the campus to the Community Building at 7:30 and then in getting them from there to the Santa Fe station to board their special train. Also a dance arranged at some place off the campus presents an added problem of supervision for the chaperons and class sponsors. In any case we will not plan on using the gymnasium for that purpose and I have not even suggested this in our publicity. However, we will wish to take advantage of your consent to make use of the first floor of the gymnasium for the dinner at 6:00 (to be served by Miss Zipple and her staff) in case of cold, rainy or threatening weather. Cordially yours, Director. HGI -KS *
